Am i doing someting wrong?

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

I must ask the question, am I doing something wrong?

My girls are all around 24 and onwards weeks except Esme who has been laying for weeks( every day she's a star)

Now i got my first blue egg last week those who were in the eggs section may remember my excitement. :D But there have been no more :(

I'm starting to worry that perhaps I'm doing something wrong the girls look the picture of health they all seem happy, but they are not laying.

I am on day 5 of Flubenvet as that seemed the obvious prob, worms, but no difference apart from Esme has now not laid the last two days.(my OH says I've broke her)

I found a disgusting thing in the nestbox yesterday and sorry binned it before taking a pic, I couldnt decide if it was a bit of chicken innard or shriveled up eggshell with nothing in it, although im thinking more innards bit.

Anyway still no eggs is this normal ? I did expect some eggs by now. Am I being impatient or have I broken the chooks? as my Oh says :(

Don't worry. It'll just take time for them to settle into regular egg laying. If they're wormed, checked for lice and mites and eating and drinking normally they'll get round to it.

I have a chook, Honey who laid an egg and I had to wait another 6 weeks for the second! She's been great ever since.

Just make sure they're getting plenty of calcium and you'll be getting eggs in no time.

It's all a bit all over the place when they start.. Some chook breeds take longer to start than others.. I'm sure very soon you'll be getting some eggs..

If they've been on growers then you can swap to layers pellets/mash. You might get some soft egg shells at first.. the best though, is you might get some double yolkers! They do some odd things to start. The egg production drops off abit when the days get shorter, so keep that in mind.

Might be a good idea at the moment, to stick to there pellets or mash, whichever they are on for a bit until they start laying properly and keep treats to a minimum and def only in the afternoon when they've eaten most of there chook food. You may already be doing this.

Good luck hope your yum eggs arrive v soon.

I collected four POL hybrids in August. One is laying every day, one lays one or two a week and the other two are not laying yet. That's just the way it goes.

When I collected my first girls last October, I had to wait until December for the first one to lay an egg and a lot longer for the others.

Thanks Folks,

It worried me more that Esme has stopped laying since starting the flubenvet, shes the only one I bought at point of lay.

The others were all 8-9 weeks old when I got them and have been eating growers with the odd bit mixed corn and apple, lettuce usually around 6pm when i get home from work.

Switched them onto layers at 19-20 weeks so I could finish the bag, and since last week Ive cut out all the treats all together apart form the bit of sweetcorn I've laced with the wormer.

They all look great in the red wattles and combs department and have for a few weeks.

I guess I ll just keep waiting :)
