Forge Cottage
We have had our eglu 3 weeks and I still have a small question (Ha - when I asked other eglu owners this, they looked at me as if I was from space, but couldn't answer!): What is the little hairy button inside the lid of the eglu for please? Does it become a squeeky toy at night? Does it blow up a house down the road? Or maybe it's an MI5 surveillance webcam...? Maybe I am going mad after all... Bauk bauk
The Dogmother
Hairy little button? Can you post a photo as I'm not at all sure what you mean.

Forge Cottage
Thanks. I am at work so will try and take a picture later... But I can't be the only one with a hairy button, can I?
yvonne
Hi I wonder if it might be a plug for the small hole (approx 1cm) to stop water getting in ???
Forge Cottage
No, it is springy and goes in when you press it. Quite extraordinary. Maybe I should get out more...
GKH
mmm i'm very intrigued
Jules.
I have a small "hole" indented circular bit which has plastic fibery bits in it- I always presumed it was how the eglu is manufactured i.e. held in place on the mould there, or something. The Dogmother
They all have a hole, which is bunged up with silicone sealant - that's part of the manufacturing process, but it's concave rather than a 'button'.

Maybe I should get out more... ......... only if it's to look at chickens or chickeny things Welcome to the forum ........... nothing like an intriguing question to keep us amused :D I have a small "hole" indented circular bit which has plastic fibery bits in it- I always presumed it was how the eglu is manufactured i.e. held in place on the mould there, or something. Sounds like that may be the answer Jules - I have something similar on my eglu I think some may be more hairy than others
Egluntyne
I love your avatar, Forge Cottage.....nothing to do with the hairy button question but....... I know I should get out more.
Ain't Nobody Here
I want a hairy button too . Or maybe I have one already, I'll need to have a look in the daylight . Welcome to the forum, Forge Cottage .
MedusA
I'm more concerned that I haven't wondered about the hairy buttons on my eglus. I obviously don't have an enquiring mind.
Forge Cottage
Well thanks for all the replies and welcomes! So it seems likely it is a 'tummy button' from the moulding process, with a bonus hairy spring loaded button just for me... When I got home I was busy moving the eglu to a fresh patch and it got too dark to take a pic. In fact it was too dark for the girls to find their way home. They all jumped on top of the run and made squeaking noises. But I employed the torch-through-the-egg-hatch trick and they went straight in! A better description? It does not fill the hole, but stands proud with a gap all around. It is a buff colour, rounded like the top of the London Gherkin building (but smaller) and seemingly made of fine spun fibre. I was only asking as I didn't know whether it was OK to get it wet, when cleaning. It will probably turn out to be the pupa from a nesting tarantula or something - and I've been poking it. All this helps take my mind off poo picking! Thanks again everyone.
Ain't Nobody Here
It will probably turn out to be the pupa from a nesting tarantula or something - and I've been poking it. So if we don't hear from you ever again, we'll know what happened . Actually, tarantulas aren't poisonous are they? I'll be having a look to see if I am lucky enough to have a hairy button when the rain stops .
Looney
My eglu has a hairy button too, the chickens hang their disco ball from it!
Forge Cottage
The disco ball option sounds great. As long as the Tarantulas don't mind. I did take a picture but it is a bit blurry, like one of those Area 51 UFO photos. Then I couldn't figure out how to attach it... argh. Just seeing if there is an idiot's guide here and I will get back to you...

Forge Cottage
Thanks Clare. I will clean out my tummy button fluff and sleep soundly now...!

Ain't Nobody Here
I've just cleaned out my run and eglu and am delighted to report that I, too, have a hairy button . It's a very neat hole, however, with a neat plug of tightly wound fluffy stuff inside so not nearly as impressive as yours, FC .
