MadMitch
Its been rain, hail and gales all day here. Usually my girls are sensible and stay in their run but I've just been to give them some corn and they are all covered with mud and look what they have done to my lawn. Mrs Frugal
That's how mine was the first year but we had NO grass left at all. We ended up with a big flower bed . The good news is that if you keep the hens off it and reseed it in the spring, it will grow back again.

Hen Watch
It's been cold here today, but nice and sunny and dry. However, my girls do the same thing when it is heavy rain, or even prolonged persistent drizzle that waterlogs the garden. Surprising how they can reduce a 1 meter square area to mud in about 2 minutes. This was my lot in the Spring ransacking the lawn for worms after it had rained. I usually shut my girls away on days like that to save my lawn.
Boybeck
I've only had my chickens for a couple of weeks and I'm amazed at how much digging they do in the garden, especially the edges of my poor lawn.
bokbokbok
YIKES! Thanks for the warning - we were thinking about letting ours out for a wee while on the new grass . . . ohhhhhh noooooo not now!
madchickenlady
See, this is why I love my pekins. Far too fussy about getting their feathered feet dirty to turn the garden into a swamp! My girls fly from the decking to the patio to the greenhouse, totally refusing to step on soggy grass It's quite amusing the way they have to contort themselves to nibble at the lawn without stepping on it! MadMitch
HiWe love your photo of your lawn. But with you living in Gwernogle, Carmarthenshire are they in practice for your local chicken rugby final. The Gwernogle Hens v The Carmarthen Runners. Bet your team would win!!! Chicken rugby, thats a good idea. My Dorkings would be good props as they are 12lbs each, my Ixworths would make good wingers, Welsummers for centres, Pheasant fowl....dont know maybe stand off & scrum half........now I must go and buy another 7 chickens to make a team......and I also need some subs. Ooh maybe I could get Stephen Jones to come and train them...please, please, please, please, please.
Surrey Hen
My 2 girls are turning a run-sized patch of lawn into a mud bath every 2 or 3 days at the moment. I'm planning to build 'winter quarters' for them on a bed of aubiose or hemcore to save the lawn a bit. OH doesn't know this yet but he has been looking a bit worried about the patches so I don't suppose he'll mind. Not sure the girls will be impressed as there won't be any worms to dig for.
