Starbucks - How crazy is this.

Recommended Posts

went to Borders today and they have a Starbucks instore. We had a coffee and a pannini and Ian asked about this story. The girl said that the thermometers and stirrers they use for the milk are kept in a container that has constantly trickling boiling water on them to keep them sterilised.

She said research has been done and that is the most effective way to keep them clean as they are in constant use. Milk can build up bacteria very quickly and this is why they do it.

She agreed it was wasteful but they have no other option apparently. She showed him the machine and it is only a trickle of water, not exactly the gushing taps the link would have us believe!

Strange because 'The Sun' aren't known to blow things out of proportion, are they?

Like helly says, better to ask questions I think than Boycott outright, unless it's Tesco of course  !!!

Interesting how so many were ready to boycott Starbucks without checking the facts. It was written in the Sun, obvioisly true then. What is worse eating anywhere without checking their ethics OR boycotting somewhere without checking their ethics.

I boycott Starbucks not because of their ethics, but simply because I don't approve of

the Americanisation of our high streets. Apologies to the lovely Americans on the forum

:)

I'm sure Ben and Jerrys by us had one of those when I went in a few weeks ago, and it wasn't fully on like the link shows. They keep their scoops in for scooping the ice cream.

And they are big on being green too.

I won't avoid either places, but I might make a comment :D

Sorry, I was watching it on the news when the Starbucks spokesperson was talking about it and saying that they were not happy about doing it but hadn't yet found a suitable alternative.

I posted the info afterwards and didn't pay attention to where it came from.

Doesn't really affect me as I don't use them or any other major coffee franchise, prefer to support my local trade.

Same with supermarkets.
