morris
hope you dont mind, but i saw this on another forum and thought you would like appreciate it, makes me cry..... I went to a party, And remembered what you said. You told me not to drink, Mum So I had a sprite instead. I felt proud of myself, The way you said I would, That I didn't drink and drive, Though some friends said I should. I made a healthy choice, And your advice to me was right, The party finally ended, And the kids drove out of sight. I got into my car, Sure to get home in one piece, I never knew what was coming, Mum Something I expected least. Now I'm lying on the pavement, And I hear the policeman say, The kid that caused this wreck was drunk, Mum, his voice seems far away. My own blood's all around me, As I try hard not to cry. I can hear the paramedic say, This girl is going to die. I'm sure the guy had no idea, While he was flying high, Because he chose to drink and drive, Now I would have to die. So why do people do it, Mum Knowing that it ruins lives? And now the pain is cutting me, Like a hundred stabbing knives. Someone should have taught him, That it's wrong to drink and drive. Maybe if his parents had, I'd still be alive. My breath is getting shorter, Mum I'm getting really scared. These are my final moments, And I'm so unprepared. I wish that you could hold me Mum, As I lie here and die. I wish that I could say, 'I love you, Mum!' So I love you and good-bye. _________________
chickencam
This would make a very potent anti-drink driving campaign message if send to everyone. Very moving
jackiepoppies
OMG Makes you think doesn't it I think (IMO) this could be a really powerful campaign, especially with Christmas coming up. Who wrote it? Where did it come from? I want to cry. Jackiex
Cate in NZ
That poem is very powerful and makes me feel quite sad . But I'm a committed non-drinker and driver (errr, if that makes sense ), and whilst I enjoy the occasional dring I never ever drink and drive. Yesterday I get stopped by the Police, yet again, it's becoming a scarily frequent event, that time it was 08:40, and I was driving my daughter to school. The Police had set up a road block and were stopping every car that went past (and there are 3 schools in that area- lots of school run Mums ) and were checking that we were all wearing seatbelts and they were also using the breathalyser to check for drinkers. Every time I get stopped I get irrationally nervous, and every time I've been waved on fine, although I have been beginning to feel a bit picked on . But both of my children are learning to drive and both have witnessed the frequency of my stops....they've got the message that it's not worth risking it......if they're in my car chances are they'll get stopped
Egluntyne
If only they would do that in the UK. I'm all for it. Inconvenient at times I'm sure but if it sends a message and saves even one life then it is worth it.

Mel (& Paul)
Paul is a postman - and often gets stopped on his way to work - I dont think people always realise that if they have been drinking the night before they may still be over the limit the next morning (Paul is always sober by the way!) Another problem is the size of the drinks we seem to get nowadays - last night at the hotel I had a glass of wine - they said "small or medium"? so I said medium - it was 250ml - thats a third of a bottle of wine! (I drank it anyway as I was staying the night and it would have been rude not to ) I do a lot of driving in my job and would never have anything to drink if I was driving - its easier to stick to the non alcoholic stuff - I just wish there was a non alcoholic drink that wasnt cloying-ly sweet (fizzys) or acidic (orange juice) - a girl can only drink so much grapefruit and lemonade in one evenign
bronze
The thing is these heartstring ideas are great in the fact that they upset nice people who dont drink and drive but those who arent the sort to give a monkeys anyway will carry on as before. Hitting them where it hurts is the only thing that works, wallets/licenses.
The Dogmother
The only safe limit is NO DRINK at all My cousin was killed 20 years ago by a hit and run drink driver on his 16th birthday (which is why I no longer drink) Earlier this year another really good friend in the US was killed by a drink driver Two bright lights gone out needlessly. A couple of years ago I was first on the scene at a terrible accident, caused by... drink driving. Administering first aid was hard as a couple of the injuries were horrendous, luckily paramedics got there quickly. I had to testify that I had smelled drink on the accused's breath. Luckily no-one was killed. I willingly report drink drivers now; life is too short and precious not to.
Paola
If only they would do that in the UK. I'm all for it. Inconvenient at times I'm sure but if it sends a message and saves even one life then it is worth it. I agree and I also agree with Claret that the only safe limit is no drink at all. How is Ryan's family Clare?

I agree. Some of the campaigns in recent years have been very good, but they only impact on decent honest human beings who already know they shouldn't drink and drive. The scumbags that do it don't care, their egos are so inflated that "it will never happen to them" and they thoughtlessly don't consider the wider implications of their actions. I'm climbing off the soap box now
The Dogmother
They are devastated Paola - he has a few rellies in the US, but was very, very close to his inlaws here in the UK. They are good friends of mine, which is how I know Ryan; Rosie, Phil and I were at his wedding. He is a prime example of the needless loss of a shining light

Tiggy
one of my nephews recently did 6 weeks in prison for drink driving, no where near long enough if you ask me he has failed his test 3 times, no insurance nearly ran the policeman down when he was stopped - he has been banned from having even a provisional licence for 4 years- my p[oor sister was distraught that he ended up in prison but told him he deserved it
Cooks
I always nominated myself as designated driver after I could drive as I knew I would not drink, so everyone got home safety, trouble is you cant vouch for others on the road and that poem broke my heart. craftyhunnypie
Why if you were driving would you ever drink alcohol? It's insane, inconsiderate, selfish and flippin' stupid! You can have as good a time going out drinking J2O, coke, sprite. I get annoyed when I see people in the town get into their cars after being in the pub downing a good few! Innocent people get killed And it's just not on! A very sad, moving but true poem! Emma.x
Cooks
yes innocent people get killed, innocent children get left without parents, parents without children, alcohol is a lethal weapon in the wrong hands. I dont drink I might add. You might get me to have a social glass of wine once in a blue moon, but I am far happier with a fruit juice or a coke. now throw in a bar of chocolate and I will have a party!
