Tessa the Duchess
My eyes glaze over when I see text speak, and I'm afraid I don't bother now to try and decipher it. I'm the same, I told both my children that unless they write out texts properly I will just delete them! A friend of mine works in a hospital department doing secretarial stuff for 4 doctors, she says she is appalled at how really bad their spelling, grammer and punctuation is I suppose they concentrated on science subjects at school and didn't pay attention in the English lessons tsk tsk Tessa
The Dogmother
Anyone else have to read text speak out loud before they can understand it? As those of you who know me well will confirm, I just don't do texts; I'd much rather talk to my friends, but one lovely friend always texts me in text speak and I have to read it out to myself in order to understand it... then call her with my answer! Must be my age!
..lay a little egg for me
I don't mind texting if it is a non-urgent communication, but I always have to make mine grammatically correct, so I do spend a time searching out the apostrophes etc. I just can't help myself
Cate in NZ
I personally can't be bothered with text speak unless the message is really important to me, simply because I find it too hard to decipher and there's not many people that I want to put that much effort in for . But I'm a middle aged old fogey, and it's each to their own...I fully accept that for a lot of people I'm not the target audience . So if I find text speak stuff and it's from my children I'll do my best to work it out because they are important...then I'll rant at them after and they'll go at me . Pretty much anyone else...if it ain't easy to make sense of you've not sent it to the right person & I can't be bothered to work it out. Nowt wrong with it as far as I'm concerned........as long as I'm not expected to get involved. A bit like speaking Swahili really. Good luck to you if you do, but I don't & never will

MedusA
I hate text speak with a vengeance! I was annoyed yesterday, as we were following a bus with an advertisement on it asking people to text for the time of the next one, and it was all in text speak! DD uses it to a degree, but knows I won't respond unless she makes sense, so has to tone it down for her dear old mum. Personally, I use full sentences and punctuation, even when texting. Egluntyne
Personally, I use full sentences and punctuation, even when texting. Me too. Why break the habit of a lifetime?
Cinnamon
Me too. Why learn a whole new language when we have a perfectly good one to start with?
Ain't Nobody Here
Me too . I'll spend time editing texts so the spelling and punctuation is right . Don't expect quick text responses from me .
Guest
You may have noticed Cinamon that sometimes I use text speak in my status updates on Facebook. Its usually when I'm mobile on the N96 and in a rush so I'm a bit guilty Mind you a LOT of young people (former pupils!) are on my friends list. Phonix
I do tend to text in 'real' words and sentences mainly because I use predictive text but I do find that I now find it harder to read messages that I receive that are in text speak because I don't use it anymore! I must admit that I don't usually proof read my posts on the forum because it is a forum and its recreational, it not my uni coursework or a really important document so mistakes don't matter that mush as long as what I say is legible and makes some sort of sense! BUT i will try from now on to be a bit more careful over what I post and how I post it Stacey
