mand and family
Hi everyone Just a quick question about putting vaseline on their wattles and combs. Is it necessary?. I've just tried to put some on toninght, as i think it's going to be frosty unsuccessfully. I normally leave the door open all the time, but have decided to close it tonight as I couldn't get any vaseline on them. Has anyone got advice on what to do! Carol U
I've never put Vaseline on mine - most of them wouldn't let me - and I always leave the door open except in very hard frosts. So far, we haven't had a problem. Don't know if that helps!
Ain't Nobody Here
I tried that once last winter but it was a bit of a tricky job . Haven't bothered since and they seem to be fine. They certainly survived lots of frost and snow with no ill effects!
chelsea
never put vaseline on my girls either. We dont seem to get hard frosts here.
Egluntyne
You don't need to bother unless the temperature drops to around minus 10 degrees C.
mand and family
Thanks everyone for your replies I was getting a bit worried as this is my first winter with my chucks. I wanted to make sure they were ok and didn't suffer, as I don't like the cold myself! As my OH may say "it my be a case of mum spoiling them again" roll:
chickenanne
I've always been told that the problem is larger combs can get frostbitten going from a nice warm hen house into a really cold run. So I guess it depends to some extent on teh temperature difference between house and run and the size of the combs. None of mine have particualrly big combs and I would never heat the house, so even in really bitter weather I don't feel any need to use vaseline on them, and haven't ahd a problem. helenmb
I saw this product (think it is made by a Forum member too) which I thought was a lovely idea for a pressie - I think delivery was a bit steep though - but nice idea. TheCoop
I'd like to try that, but I would have NO chance of catching any of our three, let alone trying to apply this stuff to wattles and combs!
helenmb
Same with my lot - would have to do it at night after they've gone to bed

From **Here** Hi helenmb, yes it is made by a forum member - Savonista - I've had a look at her website and there is some fab stuff! After the weather this week I think i'm going to get some even if it isn't strictly frostbite conditions. I know my skin and lips have been dry and cracked this week! Mrs Frugal
I have some of that and it's WONDERFUL!!! I used it for the first time a couple of days ago when we had our first hard frost and it was so easy to apply to the hens and a little goes a long way. Smashing stuff .
