Help! Red skin

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

This is my first post having only adopted our 2 chickens, eglu etc 4 days ago from a friend (very exciting!) :o

They travelled about 2-3 hrs to get here and had some diarrhoea on the journey (not sure which one) and maybe a bit of diarrhoea for a day after.

They seem to be moulting just a little bit. They've been beautifully looked after by my friend and have been healthy up until now. They are 3 years old and seem to be behaving normally and are perky. There is one egg a day so far.

Anyway, since then one has very hard and matted feathers (?poo\diarrhoea ?mud) on her undercarriage way under her vent and round under her tummy and the skin looks pretty red and angry and she does seem to be a bit bald there aswell. There doesn't seem to be any raw or broken skin but it looks sore. No signs of mites so far and the vent itself seems ok.

We've gently bathed with damp cloth, but that wasn't getting the muck off at all. Tried standing her in a bowl of warm water earlier and sort of sponging the area. She doesn't seem to be in pain when we did this.

Any ideas what it is? We were thinking soreness from the diarrhoea or is this normal when moulting? Can't find anything online so far.

Any ideas what we can try?

Thanks very much

Haven't had anything quite as you describe, but as they have been healthy up to now and have just undergone a possibly quite stressful move, I would keep her clean and give her a few days to settle down quietly. I expect someone with more experience than me will reply quite soon. Hope all goes well and that you can then relax and enjoy your new additions.

sounds like a moult to me.

I would have suggested checking for lice, as that can be a sign of a dirty bum but you have already eliminated that. :)

I expect she enjoyed the bathing, I would do it again if it gets mucky again. My girls love being bathed.

Dihorrea (sp!) probably normal due to change in home/movement etc - should ease off.

Keep an eye on her.

I agree. The skin can seem surprisingly red when they moult.

Why not try adding some bokashi bran to their pellets, and giving them a dollop of probiotic yoghurt. Avipro is useful too, if they have the squitts. I'd cut out all other treats for the next couple of days till their tums settle.
