Valkyrie
We have just received a scam notice. I think this has done the rounds before but as Chr mas is coming it is a good reminder: "Can you circulate this around especially as Christmas is fast approaching - it has been confirmed by Royal Mail. The Trading Standards Office are making people aware of the following scam: A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a premium rate number). DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize . If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £15 for the phone call. Please advise family members/Friends."

stoice
I had this sent to me several times this year Here’s a useful website to determine whether these things are genuine or not… http://www.hoax-slayer.com/pds-phone-scam.html It seems that this particular one is a hoax! clootie
Crikey, thanks for the warning Koojie. There are some really horrible people out there.
Valkyrie
Thanks Stoice - that's a very handy link for important ones. I thought I recognised the PDS name from before. I guess it goes along with the first snowball of the year to go around! What an eejit I am! I couldn't resist looking at the funny ones - I got the "bum" one a couple of weeks ago, although I rather liked the camera and the banking one! But it would do us good to be wary of any nasties that go around - I was tricked by someone selling asthma booklets a few years ago - I wasn't going to pay the £3 requested, although I donated £1 instead. Apparently that was the whole point - people would donate rather than buy the magazine. So now it is "no thank you" to callers and check with the Royal Mail for bogus couriers - if any. Last winter we had people trying garages in the early hours - couldn't get into ours, although they jumped over the side gate and tried the shed also without any luck - they left big bootprints in the veggie patch though because they couldn't be bothered to waste time walking on the paths. Two of our neighbours were broken into and all along the road. A cousin who lives near Andover had a burglar downstairs - he emptied her handbag while she was upstairs asleep. So don't forget to lock up and make sure there are no keys near the front door - inside as well as outside. As Shaw Taylor used to say: "keep 'em peeled" - that includes scam hoaxes! PS I am so going to forward Stoice's link to OH who sent me the warning in the first place!
stoice
No problem I got my ebay account broken into - possibly through phishing so I'm always extra careful of ANY email now.

Geoid
A STATEMENT FROM PHONEPAYPLUS ABOUT THE CURRENT 'POSTAL SCAM' CHAIN EMAIL PhonepayPlus, the phone-paid services regulator, is aware that a chain e-mail about an alleged postal scam is being circulated on the internet. The email refers to the Royal Mail, Trading Standards and ICSTIS (PhonepayPlus’ former name). PhonepayPlus appreciates that recipients of the email may want to find out more information about the alleged scam and has therefore issued the following statement: • The chain email refers to a service that was shut down by us in December 2005. • We subsequently fined the company that was operating the service, Studio Telecom (based in Belize), £10,000. • The service is NO LONGER running and has NOT been running since December 2005. • The email refers to a £15 charge for simply being connected to a recorded message. This is NOT TRUE – a £15 connection charge does NOT exist. The service in question actually cost £1.50 per minute and lasted six minutes, making a total cost of £9 if callers stayed on the line for the full six minutes. • You do NOT need to contact us, or the Royal Mail, about this service as it was stopped almost two years ago. • If you receive a copy of the email warning you about the alleged scam, please do NOT forward it to others. Instead, please forward this statement from PhonepayPlus.

Janty
Thanks for the warning. I have told Dad and my in-laws. Dad regularly receives phone calls from people telling him that he has won competitions. He always replies that that must be a blooming miracle because he hasn't entered any competitions. He then puts the phone down. He does make us laugh. Mind you, at 71 he is allowed to get grumpy with cold callers.
..lay a little egg for me
Combining this thread with the one about impossible wish list, I want an automatic phone call screener that hangs up on cold callers but lets through calls from genuine people. The caller ID thing is OK but not when you have to get up and go to the phone to see who it is. I know I could just always leave it to the answerphone but many of my friends just hang up if it is the answerphone...
Valkyrie
Had one of those on my mobile. For the past few days I have missed a call from a number that "Ooops, word censored!"ody recognised. Today I answered thinking that someone may have got the wrong number and just in case they were worried about the person at the other end. Nope, it was someone flogging a different phone and payment type. Mine is pay as you go, and as far as I am concerned that is suitable. I said "No thank you, goodbye". I was rather irritated.
