maxhen
Sorry - I missed the reference Helen made to books Leslie - to be fair I think I only mentioned the name - Dr ian Billingshurst who started the idea. This is his website : www.drianbillinghurst.com/index.html Stuff there about his books - 'Give your dog a bone' - and lots of other info. There are BARF websites/forums. The thing about BARF is there are LOTS of different ways of interpreting the principles. People find what works well for them and their dogs. My dogs seem very healthy, strong and fit on it (although they do rather like their Burns brekkie too!) Another tip - introduce raw chicken wings by holding them in your hand - this is especially the case for young dogs and for dogs that are used to eating everything very fast. Let them chew away at it gradually - the thing about the wings is that they are small and so look (to an older dog) like they can be swallowed whole. You need to encourage them to chew it up. Who knows - you may tuen out to be more like your two aunties than you ever thought possible! H
buffie
Yes helen they do have to learn Daisie had to learn to chew, she just used to swallow the burns food and that was also a problem. It also used to swell up and could make her unwell particualrly the speed she swallowed it. I am due to call Chris again today and fill them in on daisie and pleased to say absolutely fine again! Lesley
Thank you both - I did find some books on Amazon and ordered them. Plenty of reading for me to catch up on now. don't the dogs ever have a problem with splinters of bone? I mentioned it to the vet on Tuesday and he said he had had to remove a splinter of bone from a dog.
buffie
well I was worried but no need. If daisie doesn't chew she is a bit sick. It doesn't harm her it's a learning process. Her teeth are designed for this. veg is more difficult!! A dog has the skill to eat in this way and it's teeth are designed for it ( I didn't get it at first) you see them learn to eat and not a splinter in sight I can add, I would never put my baby at risk and it paid off BBx
Trish
My vet said that raw bones rarely splinter, cooked ones can do though. If you are worried the chicken necks are supposed to be the best as the bone there tends to crumble as it's not in long lengths. My cats get raw chicken wings and have never had a problem with them
maxhen
Yes - raw bones are usually OK - it is the cooked ones that casue the problems. Cooking them changes the way they react to crunching teeth! My vet said that with bones the most common problem is fights breaking out between dogs in a pack OVER the bones...... BTW I get the organic hemp oil from www.savant-health.co.uk in case anyone else wants to pursue that. Helen

AnnieP
So sorry to hear that Karen. Having gone through that in December/January, I really do empathise with you. Its such a terrible "limbo" state to be in, isn't it. Lesley! Have you tried sprinkling a drop of lavender oil on your pillow to help you sleep better? (I am sure you have). It really worked for me when I was suffering from similar.
Lesley
I've just split the 'anxieties' part of this thread to another thread as my problems are not really much to do with raw, meaty bones
