quickcluck
Any ideas? After hazels bald bum shock, thought we might go down the red mite powder route just in case as we've no idea why her bum is bald or if she did it herself so we are covering all eventualities So any advice greatly recieved.... Claire.Donne
My vet puts hers into the house once the door is closed through the top opening so they can't get away!
daj198
I use to container to almost shoot them with the powder and then dust it in by ruffling their feathers. They don't like it much but it saves picking them up and doing it which I think would be more complicated and perhaps require two people... you could also get it on yourself then. Try their dustbath and nestbox too.
Ain't Nobody Here
I use a large paintbrush for under their wings/round their vents. I also sprinkle it liberally in the nestbox after a clean out.
Angels4
I've placed some mite powder or DE in a pillow case, place the girls inside (head sticking out) and massage.

jill the potter
I know I'm only a novice, but I understood that red mites don't live on the chickens but live in the coup/nest box and only feed on the chooks at night, - it's the lice that actually live on the birds. So to get rid of the mites you have to treat their living quarters. But for Lice you treat the birds. That's what I've read, but as i've said I'm just starting out so.............. Egluntyne
You are right. Red mite Powder is more of a preventative......and it makes them smell divine.
Sandychick
I wait until I find them all in the dust bath and sprinkle red mite powder all over them - then they roll about and get a good covering! They don't seem to notice me doing this as they go all placid when dust bathing. They do smell nice after it
moomin
That's a really good idea Sandychick!! Mine are often in the dustbath which is contains Red-mite powder and Diatom anyway, but it never occurred to me to sprinkle it onto them whilst they were in there! Joojoo
and it makes them smell divine. I thought it was only me that loves the smell. I've been sprinkling it in the bottom of the cat litter trays too

Chicken Licken
Sprinkle them periodically (and get them in a mood). Mostly put it liberally in the hemcore in the nesting box which they rootel about when they make a nest to lay. I use the louse powder which is effective against red mite also (and it smells nice too)
quickcluck
Well I picked them up and squirted in as many places as I could with a riggling chicken!! Might go for the pillow case next time... also put some into the nest box.... how often should I reapply?
jools+6
i thought about getting one of those flour/icing sugar dusting thingies . know what i mean ? with this icy weather the grounds a bit hard for dust baths so i thought one of those would do the trick .
