bluekarin Posted November 10, 2008 Share Posted November 10, 2008 I tried giving my girls some sweetcorn mixed in with their afternoon rice, bit of mixed corn and poultry spice treat. They ate all the rice and mixed corn and left all the sweetcorn! Is it because it was cooked stuff (which I had defrosted)? Do they only like the dried stuff? I had read on here that someone gave their girls corn on the cob - was it raw? Can I give them the corn you buy for making pop corn? My lot used to eat raw carrot peelings and brussel sprouts, now they turn their noses up in disgust unless I cook them..... fussy little madams. When they were young they simply refused to eat tomatoes. Now they fight over them. I'm too mean to give my girls expensive corn on the cob. They love dried stuff. But when my children eat cooked whole cobs I still chuck the nibbled remains out to the chickens and they strip every single s"Ooops, word censored!" remaining bare. helenmb Posted November 11, 2008 Share Posted November 11, 2008 I have given my girls the actual corn on the cob and they usually love it (but like you have noticed they can be a bit sniffy with things sometimes). I give them the cob uncooked but I also give them as a treat canned sweetcorn (packed in water) and also if I have any that I have cooked (I buy frozen) I give it to them too. So either way they usually like it cooked or uncooked. Perhaps not a good idea to give them too much of the dried stuff unless it is in the late afternoon otherwise they will scoff this before their pellets and then upset their nutritional requirements for egg making. Mine have raw corn on cob (99p for 3 in sainsbury's basic range) and they loved cabbage that i hung up and they love layers pellets porridge and they love oats. They are less keen on fruit and didn't like potato and sweet potato peelings or curly cale or broccoli. they quite liked kidney beans and really liked tinned cooked puy lentils (ok one of them was ill and I wanted to give them a treat but had run out of everything else - I'd never usually give them that! way too pricy) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I also grow cabbages and brocolli for them - I can't stand the stuff.......I look at it as recycling it into eggs! So it's worth all the work that goes into growing it! I'm a nuce mummy! Louise NB: We haven't found anything they don't like as yet!! Tomatoes rice pasta (worms) noodles raisins grapes apples - preferably bruised with nice brown bits!!!! Angels4 Posted November 11, 2008 Share Posted November 11, 2008 I feed mine layers mash and they spend the better part of their day picking out the bits they want (dried corn) I went out and got them some scratch (dried corn) and they WON'T touch it. My impression from reading the posts on here and observing my chooks is that each flock has its own tastes and I wonder if it is something to do with what their bodies need. For instance, mine free range all day and have plenty of green stuff and so if I take them green treats they are not too bothered but go mad for anything red or yellow, whereas chooks that are kept in runs with little/no grass appear to be very keen on the green stuff. They had a bit of a go at the pasta and carried bits around the garden - they did look funny. But they didn't like the courgette (they didn't like the cabbage I put in a wire mesh cage and hung up in their run last week). When you give them apple do you chop them up? It's a bit like weaning a baby this chicken feeding lark! (Just read your post lay a little egg for me, and that sounds very plausible. Mine free range nearly everyday, apart from one day this week due to the rain, so they probably get as much green stuff as they want. I shall try some different coloured stuff and see what happens). Bluekarin, I don't chop the apples up - I throw windfalls into the run, and they just demolish the whole thing! It may be a good idea to chop them though so you can scatter them in different directions, avoids having your whole flock fighting over one apple. I just chuck a whole one in the run for them to kick about! Won't eat sweetcorn though other than hard dried corn.
