bluekarin
I tried giving my girls some sweetcorn mixed in with their afternoon rice, bit of mixed corn and poultry spice treat. They ate all the rice and mixed corn and left all the sweetcorn! Is it because it was cooked stuff (which I had defrosted)? Do they only like the dried stuff? I had read on here that someone gave their girls corn on the cob - was it raw? Can I give them the corn you buy for making pop corn? I don't know - so may questions about corn
bigmommasally
Hi I've tried my chickens with corn on the cob both cooked and un-cooked and they turn their noses up at it. I've even tried picking it off the cob for them and they're still not interested. Yet they love their dried corn mix!
bluekarin
I think they are just fussy madams!
Christian
Mine love raw corn on the cob and make a real mess when they eat it. Try a few different treats every week or so. Their tastes do change. Mine won't touch broccoli or raisins

Barkisland
Mine love raw corn on the cob, I hang it up on a string to make it more interesting, and they can strip a cob bare in a couple of hours They love grapes, but won't eat raisins. They don't like poultry spice or cabbage. It's a learning curve for all of us!
ChrisP
Mine LOVE sweetcorn, raw, defrosted, cooked, corn on the cob, etc etc Mind you, mine will eat anything that we give them they do get fed, honestly! We give them lots of layers pellets!
Hen Watch
Christian is right, their tastes do change as they get older and wiser. My lot used to eat raw carrot peelings and brussel sprouts, now they turn their noses up in disgust unless I cook them..... fussy little madams. When they were young they simply refused to eat tomatoes. Now they fight over them. I'm too mean to give my girls expensive corn on the cob. They love dried stuff. But when my children eat cooked whole cobs I still chuck the nibbled remains out to the chickens and they strip every single s"Ooops, word censored!" remaining bare. helenmb
I have given my girls the actual corn on the cob and they usually love it (but like you have noticed they can be a bit sniffy with things sometimes). I give them the cob uncooked but I also give them as a treat canned sweetcorn (packed in water) and also if I have any that I have cooked (I buy frozen) I give it to them too. So either way they usually like it cooked or uncooked. Perhaps not a good idea to give them too much of the dried stuff unless it is in the late afternoon otherwise they will scoff this before their pellets and then upset their nutritional requirements for egg making. pistachio
looks like chickens are as varied in their tastes as we are. Mine have raw corn on cob (99p for 3 in sainsbury's basic range) and they loved cabbage that i hung up and they love layers pellets porridge and they love oats. They are less keen on fruit and didn't like potato and sweet potato peelings or curly cale or broccoli. they quite liked kidney beans and really liked tinned cooked puy lentils (ok one of them was ill and I wanted to give them a treat but had run out of everything else - I'd never usually give them that! way too pricy)
Dora
Yes mine love sweetcorn too and most things , my daughter tried them with fresh pineapple , I was a bit sceptacle and thought it might be a bit acidic but needless to say they scoffed it down !! When Biscuit was going through her moult I tried tuna cat food and that went down as well !

Guest
Mine adore sweetcorn!! I have an allotment so grow lots of it - they have just finished the last from my store! I also grow cabbages and brocolli for them - I can't stand the stuff.......I look at it as recycling it into eggs! So it's worth all the work that goes into growing it! I'm a nuce mummy! Louise NB: We haven't found anything they don't like as yet!! Tomatoes rice pasta (worms) noodles raisins grapes apples - preferably bruised with nice brown bits!!!! Quorn (ironically) Spelt weetabix porridge any cereal in fact The list goes on......little gannets!
Angels4
I feed mine layers mash and they spend the better part of their day picking out the bits they want (dried corn) I went out and got them some scratch (dried corn) and they WON'T touch it. Corn on the cob is picked clean in seconds though.
..lay a little egg for me
Mine love sweetcorn, especially the stuff left on corn-on-the-cob after we've finished with it. My impression from reading the posts on here and observing my chooks is that each flock has its own tastes and I wonder if it is something to do with what their bodies need. For instance, mine free range all day and have plenty of green stuff and so if I take them green treats they are not too bothered but go mad for anything red or yellow, whereas chooks that are kept in runs with little/no grass appear to be very keen on the green stuff. Of course that is probably far too scientific and they are just fickle!
bluekarin
Its nice to read my girls are normal! Yesterday I did them a lovely bowl of pasta twists and chopped courgette. They had a bit of a go at the pasta and carried bits around the garden - they did look funny. But they didn't like the courgette (they didn't like the cabbage I put in a wire mesh cage and hung up in their run last week). When you give them apple do you chop them up? It's a bit like weaning a baby this chicken feeding lark! (Just read your post lay a little egg for me, and that sounds very plausible. Mine free range nearly everyday, apart from one day this week due to the rain, so they probably get as much green stuff as they want. I shall try some different coloured stuff and see what happens). Olly
There is NOTHING mine won't eat! Bluekarin, I don't chop the apples up - I throw windfalls into the run, and they just demolish the whole thing! It may be a good idea to chop them though so you can scatter them in different directions, avoids having your whole flock fighting over one apple. Mutrix Farmers
My girls love apple. OH spoils them by cutting one in half and microwaving it so it's soft! I just chuck a whole one in the run for them to kick about! Won't eat sweetcorn though other than hard dried corn. I tried the "fussy eater" disguising trick with brocolli (which they won't eat) of mashing it up with their porridge. Success!!
bluekarin
I did try some Wheetabix today mixed with a bit of water. Went down as well as the cabbage and the fresh sweetcorn. Tomorrow they shall dine on apple and I shall let you know how that was received.
