HENthusiastic
HI. Ive read various posts advising probiotic yoghort for girls that just seem a bit under the weather. Does it actually say "probiotic" on the pots? I got some yesterday that says "live natural yoghort" is that the same thing?
jade&mike
the one i use is strawberry probiotic from sainsburys, but im sure live yogurt is the same. my chickens have it twice aweek as a treat and they love it, if they could they would lick the bowl
Egluntyne
Probiotic yogurts contain additional bacteria with stronger health benefits than just live cultures alone and, unlike active cultures, probiotic components are able to reach the intestine while still alive, allowing the bacteria to successfully aid in digestive health. Taken from **this article** Mine aren't fussy....they will eat any sort.
The Dogmother
Live and probiotic both give the same results - they contain the bacteria that is beneficial to their gut flora.
PurpleTree
I've just got some probiotic yoghurt from Lidl's. How much shall I give between 3 of them? Shall I mix it in with anything? I was thinking maybe weetabix.
Egluntyne
I give a good dollop and mix it with anything that is soft and a bit sloppy. I even put it in mashed potato. No complaints so far.
PurpleTree
How much of a good dollop is a good dollop? I suspect I always give too much of whatever I give them - usually corn when trying to get them back in the run!
Egluntyne
How much of a good dollop is a good dollop? Bearing in mind that I have 18 hens....a good dollop is probably equal to a small yoghurt pot full which is around 5 fl ozs or 140ish mls. The Dogmother
I'm never very scientific about it either.
PurpleTree
Right ok, so not all that much then? Does yoghurt keep ok in the fridge once it's opened? I've got some in just normal small pot size. How often shall I give it to them then?
The Dogmother
Mine get it as and when I remember, so probably once a week or so. The yoghurt keeps for quite a whie in the fridge, but then I also give a tablespoonful to the pup on her breakfast, so it never hangs around for long! HENthusiastic
Ive got some now. They are going to have it for breakfast with pellet porriege. I expect they will love it...... they love most things.
PurpleTree
I gave it to mine this avo. Weetabix mushed up with some water, added some yoghurt and a bit of mixed corn. They loved it, and splattered it everywhere - stand well back! Hopefully will help the watery poo.
Lydia
Mine like it neat or mixed with some grated cucumber raita style. The result is one messy run and 8 chickens sporting white beaks and feathers
alison
I warm it and make porridge with it for the chooks, throw in some raisins, mixed seeds etc, I probably use a whole large tub!
