Sorry stupid question ..

 

Does anyone know if BHWT will rehome just 2 hens rather than what I think it the min 3?

 

Reason being I have a very settled flock at the moment of hybrids and pekin bantams in together so rather than upset the applecart during winter I wondered if I could manage 2 ex batts in the pekins old homemade house and run for the winter insight of the others but also moved in garage during very coldweather if bald.. then do serious merging in the srping when hopefully more feathers etc...however the run is only about 3.5 foot square so 3 hens would be a bit cramped ..

 

Can I ask ex batts owners thoughts on this arrangment as well as the only 2 question from thoses in the know?

If BHWT will only let you take a minium of three, why not partner with someone nearby?

You could get your two and they could get what ever they needed.

 

I live in London and want to put my name down for three, but don't think that is near enough to you if we got five.

I am sorry we wouldn't allow hens to be rehomed in that way. The rehoming check requires that you are the intended rehomer and hens can't be passed on or shared. I'm sure you can understand the policy is for a good reason and always in the best interest of the hens being rehomed.

would have thought if egglou has oter girls too then the reason for only letting 3 go would not stand. If one of her poor exbats died she could pair up with one of the others. therefore there would not be only 1 lonely. Perhaps egglou should contact the rehomers direct. Also with what sounds like a fab set up with gatage as well, maybe 2 that would not be suitable for newbies might be great!

Thank you its a kind thought and I do appreciate it, however I also understand BHWT policy and think its only right they have rules and conditions as the welfare of the girls comes first so I don't mind at all!

This is BHWT Policy on numbers and thanks for your understanding Egg Lou

 

We re-home 3 as an ideal minimum number of birds, if we only home two and a hen dies (which we can never guarantee won’t happen), it leaves a lonely hen and gives the re-homer a bad experience of keeping ex-bats. Taking three lessens the likelihood of being left with a lonely hen. However, we will re-home just two birds if someone has either one hen or has a small group of bantams. We do not re-home small numbers of two to a re-homer who already has more than one full size bird – that will likely result in bad bullying and ex-bats are not fit enough to cope with both the sudden transition into a different environment and a merge process where they are outnumbered. We always endeavour to give the advantage to the incoming birds so an ideal merge process would be a re-homer with 4 hens taking 5 minimum new ex-bats to merge into the group.

 

I hope this answers questions of numbers and this is why coordinators speak to the individual rehomers and discuss what is best for the hens.
