I'm relatively new to this got my chickens from Omlet at the beginning of September at the point of lay. There are 6 of them and after some fighting and illness we have now got them all living happily together and all well. They are laying 5 eggs a day and I am managing to use them all (amazing boiled & scrambled egg and quiches and cakes) (preaching to the converted there I guess ) So will this glorious egg supply stop over winter. it feels like winter now and they are laying 5 a day still. moochoo Posted November 24, 2008 Share Posted November 24, 2008 The good news is no If they're all Miss Pepperpots and Gingernut Rangers, they're hybrids which lay all year round. As this is their first winter you will probably notice very little change in their laying habits but next winter they will have their annual moult and stop laying for a couple of months whilst they re-feather. You may also notice a few less eggs as the amount of daylight reduced but they'll soon pick up in the Spring. As they get older you'll probably get larger eggs but fewer per week. Mine are all settled too! I'm so relieved not to be having to supervise them all the time... It's great to be able to enjoy them again rather being constantly stressed out! moochoo Posted November 25, 2008 Share Posted November 25, 2008 Ex batts are a Rhode Island Red hybrid so you should get some eggs over winter. The good lifers Posted November 27, 2008 Share Posted November 27, 2008 I have 2 hens, one is young and new, but the other (gingernut) has seemed to have stopped laying for winter!! It seems to be when it's only a few degrees in temperature when she stops, when it heats up a bit she lays!!I'm looking forward to the new one laying too!!!
