A chickychickychick-ENN!!
I DO like making sock monkeys. But sometimes they go a little bit wrong... That's a tail, not anything dodgy . He was the first one I made. His 'bum' (the heel) ended up the wrong way round, so he looks like he's wearing pants. And the pink one, I made in the dark during a power cut. Can you tell?! A chickychickychick-ENN!!
the green one looks like he needs a wee! That red one made me jump! He so does! I hadn't noticed that before but he does look like he needs a wee! That neon pink one with red hair is the most ridiculous sock monkey ever. I was at some friends' house, and they were cleaning out lots of stick insect tanks and the electric just went. We sat with a wind up torch and radio, and that was how he came out. The next morning we were still finding foot-long insects all over the ceiling too! People are always asking me for sock monkeys but that one somehow hasn't found another home! I'm quite fond of him now, the freak.
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
The yanks have these special socks with red heels called 'rockford' socks. I got some in the post today from ebay. V exciting. They make the 'classic' sock monkey: Here are some instructions: http://lennytaylor.freeyellow.com/Monkey.htm If you don't have red heel socks, just sew a mouth across the heel of a normal sock. Nicola H
I love the first one he looks like a Moomin.........
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
I heart Moomins. I wonder how hard it is to make a proper Moomin from socks? I have the DVD box set of the 1980s Polish/German Moomin kids' programme. The one that was on ITV. There was a later Japanese cartoon version but it's not as mystical. A chickychickychick-ENN!!
He tells me onions are preferable to trees for hanging out in. Apparently all the monkeys do it these days. Anna x
craftyhunnypie
I just had to make one last night! It's amazing what a pair of socks can make. Mine is long & lanky - female and I gave it a bow on its head! It kept me quiet all evening making it & hubby said the look of concentration on my face was priceless! I'll take a photo later. Mrs Webmuppet
LMW came home from school with a pressie from one of the helpers at school- the instructions for a sock monkey and a selection of stripey socks - apparently when we aren't fruit picking, sailing, catching up on Harry Potter DVDs, making jam and all the other things there are to do in the school holidays we will be making sock monkeys..............I'd better go to the CO OP haberdashery dept. on my way to work tommorrow for some decent sewing needles, stuffing and some eyes! I just hope my sewing skills are up to it.
craftyhunnypie
Oh sock monkeys are great to make - I love them. Each one has its own charater & you can make the face how you want..juicy lips, pouty lips, big eyelashes, fast asleep. You get the idea! A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Don't worry about proper stuffing - those cheap fibre pillows (wilkinsons and sometimes pound shops and IKEA do them) are just as good and much cheaper if you cut them open and pull out the stuffing. Chook n Boo Mum
.......or use the pillows which a puppy decided looked like they needed "altering" like I do ! Mrs Webmuppet
I have got all the stuff to make the sock monkeys now. A quick trip to the shop formally known as the Co Op and I have all the stuff, I bought a huge bag of stuffing for £3 as I threw the dodgy pillow out a while ago. PurpleTree
one of the blogs I read, she's been making sock monkeys and creatures for a while, here's the link http://amoregreenandsimplelife.blogspot.com/search/label/sock%20creatures she's started selling them on Etsy too. They do look very cool, I'd love to have a go, but wouldn't know where to start.
