Kitten with Chickens

Recommended Posts

Hi,

DH has just agreed for us to get a Kitten.

I wanted to get some advice from you guys on how to go about introducing the Chickens to the little bundle of trouble.

Am I likely to expect problems?

Do Cats attack Chickens regularly?

My chickens free-range the garden when I am home. Should I consider building them an enclosure to limit where they go?

Any advice would be great....

Finally, Does anyone know of someone with Kittens in Camberley/surrounding areas that is selling them.

Thanks Guys, Have a good day :D

good news about kitty , we have two cats and they are scared rigid of our 6 girls, they give them a very wide berth...lol its funny cos my older cat was a birdy hunter when she was smaller, now she looks terrified they are gonna eat her if she forgets and ventures out the back door!!

Thanks for the reply.

The cat next door is scared of my ladies. They all tend to gang up on him when he ventures anywhere near the garden. The best he can do now is sit on the fence with his rather large tummy overhanging the sides. At least the cat poo in the garden has stopped.

We will get a cat flap fitted to the back door so at least "Dave" (our made up name to talk about him in front of the children) can make a fast entrance into the house.

My older Tubby Puddy is frightened of them, but tries to ignore them. Loki has loved my ex-batts right from the start and likes to hang out in the garden with his girlies. The hens tolerate him till he tries to get them to play chase, then they see him off

Rather than buy a kitten, if you're happy with a moggie, you could contact your local rescue centre as they will probably have lots looking for good permanent homes. Loki came from my local centre last December and is one of the sweetest natured little boys you could ever wish to meet :D

We have four cats(2 white tonkaneese, one ginger tom, one black kitten), the three grown up ones don't go anywhere near the chooks, they did try but found themselves getting chased!! very funny!! We got a new kitten (Winstone) two weeks ago, he is rehomed from a farm (a kind lady is working with the cats protection and the farmer to try and rehome kittens from his 25 cats and gradually have the mums neutured) I dont forsee any problems when he goes out to play, Im sure the girls will soon put him in his place!

Good luck with "Dave" im sure there is a little cat somewhere just waiting for a lovely home - Winston was hiding in a cold barn (he is black with green eyes, my dh has always wanted a black cat so when i saw he needed a new home i knew it was meant to be) x

I agree with all the other posts, it's more likely that the kitten will get put in it's place. My youngest cat is also a keen 'hunter' and it did worry me at first when we got the chickens, but one flap of their wings and Ditsy was off like a shot, she now largley ignores them. Having siad that, one of her favourite places to sun herself these days is on top of the eglu!!! (must get a picture of that one of these days!

my cat is not keen on the chickens at all. We lie in a very 'catty' neighbourhood (lol thats not a reflection on my neighbours) and any cats that do venture into my garden soon get seen off by the chickens. I expect a kitten would be very curious to start with, but the chickens would soon give it 'the message' to stay away.

My cat came from the RSPCA. Traditionally kittens are more available in the summer months, but I'm sure there will be some around somewhere. If not a cat rescue centre, has the vet got a notice board?

My two cats each get different reactions from the chickens.

Smegul has never bothered with the chickens and they in turn leave her alone.

Sausage used to stalk the chickens when they first arrived and they were very wary of him. However, since the brahmas chased him and caught him, he avoids them like the plague and even the pekins chase him if given the opportunity.

Smegul can lie underneath the trampoline and the chickens will peck around her. If Sausage shows his face in the garden, they will chase after him.

my cats would have loved to have eaten the chickens (they stalked them for the first day or two), when they were 14 weeks...but now are chased by the chooks...I'd keep your kitten away for its own protection until its grown....as the chickens will chase it if it annoys them....my opinion anyway.. :-)
