Ygerna
I read somewhere (can't remember where though ) that if you rub vapour rub onto the soles of your feet rather than your chest it actually helps clear stuffiness more effectively. I have no idea if its true, not had a cold since reading that to try it out, but, I know that I get desperate enough to try ANYTHING when I get colds. I am a wimp and colds really really are the pits
Janty
Hubby made some rosehip syrup to HFW's recipe and I have been drinking that diluted with boiling water. Rosehip syrup contains 20 x the vitamin c of oranges and it's gorgeous too.
Guest
Oh good. I love hot Vimto...and the colds and flu season is upon us. We used to get hot vimto with soluble dispirin in it when we were little, and bunged up. Put me right off vimto for life!
Old Speckled Hen
When I was working I NEVER got colds. I put that down to taking echinacea and Vit C (strangely both recently disproved as "cold ameliorants) and a constantly tuned-up immune system as I was in contact with so many people daily. I had a fraught exit into retirement and last January I got Flu ...real flu not just a cold. Since then my muscles ache constantly and some days are worse than others. There's a lot to be said about "granny's cures" and we shouldn't dismiss them out of hand. Having said that there seems an inordinate amount of money spent in proving or illustrating what we all know, given a bit of common sense. ..lay a little egg for me
When I was working I NEVER got colds.I put that down to taking echinacea and Vit C (strangely both recently disproved as "cold ameliorants) and a constantly tuned-up immune system as I was in contact with so many people daily.. When I worked in London and had to take the train and tube each day, I had a permanent cold for the first year and none thereafter. I did not take Vit C or echinacea so I think the tuned-up immune system was the key. Vit C in very high doses has been shown to shorten the duration of a cold slightly as has echinacea in some studies, but, sadly, there have been no well performed studies suggesting that either agent can prevent a cold. chickencam
They had a doctor on BBC Breakfast this morning and she said any hot drink would have a very similar effect but that honey and lemon even with a nip of whiskey was even better more vit C I had a really awful cold years ago and I was staying at my inlaws and my FIL made me a fantastic hot toddy, I slept really well and woke up nearly cured the next morning

The Dogmother
Try a drop of Citricidal daily in fruit juice; my vet swears by it. It needs to be in juice though as it tastes very bitter.
Valkyrie
Hot lemon and honey with ginger root grated in it. Lemon cleans, honey soothes and the ginger basically frightens everything else away (it also floats on the top so looks rather unappetising - more like a swamp)! Vicks on chest and throat - allergic to Olbas - makes me wheeze!
