Tessa the Duchess
It's true this time, they couldn't find a buyer. Closing down sale starts tomorrow. I was in a branch today, the place was in chaos, didn't look as though anybody was bothering with trying to keep the shelves tidy. Very sad, and sorry to anybody that it going to lose their job. Janty
It is a shame. There's never a good time to lose your job but just before Christmas is especially horrid.

bigmommasally
I can't believe Woolies is really closing down. It's such a shame, they're part of our heritage, our high streets won't be the same without them.
Cooks
we haven't had a woolies in Cambridge for years now! they closed due to the rent being too high in the centre I believe. Thats the colleges ownings all the property and asking whatever rent they like!
Looney
Very sad to see the stores close down. I love going to the Ely branch. Won't dare visit there today though as I expect it will be rammed to bursting madchickenlady, so sorry that you are having to go through this. Lesley
So sad for all those losing their jobs I think they are still hoping a buyer will come along but it's looking doubtful
bigroundal
I think its a really sad thing, losing one of the oldest highstreet retailers...and feel very sorry for all those losing jobs. Good luck to all the woolies staff for the future.
Old Speckled Hen
So sorry for everyone whose job is lost. I'll remember Woolies so fondly having shopped there all my life and seeing things there changed. Does anybody remember how they used to hang things up high on rails and you had to get an assistant to reach them down with a pole? You could get anything in Woolies. Now there will be a mad scramble in its death throes.

craftyhunnypie
I don't know how woolies staff are managing to work today, knowing that their jobs are going. Terrible! Sending warm wishes to all the woolies workers. Emma.x

crazygal
So sorry for Madchickenlady. That is really tough. I've always shopped at Woolies- from when I was a child buying 7 inch singles with my pocket money, to when I was a student buying pic and mix (Woolies used to be the only shop open in my University town on a Sunday back then!!), to buying clothes and toys for my children. Our local branch seemed to have lost its way over the last few years...stock always appeared haphazard and you never knew what you were going to find when you went in... I predict WH Smith going the same way...
