horrible vent problem

Recommended Posts

Hello

When I went out on chicken duty today I noticed that Margot has got a horrible looking vent. There are some feathers missing and it almost looks as if she has got piles, vent very red and almost looks as if it is hanging out! Sorry if too much information! The raggedy feathers beneath her vent have got white poo all over them.

She seems happy enough, pecking about and eating and she is still laying.

Barbara doesn't have any problems.

Can anyone suggest anything!

Sounds like a prolapse which will need urgent attention. If you plan to sort it out, make sure you search the forum for some past experiences first! Clean her up and gently push the inside back in using olive oil or vaseline for lubricant.

If it looks more complicated, i.e. very dirty, cut, infected or swollen then my advice will be to get her to a vet as soon as you can.

Thank you - I have done some research and agree with your diagnosis, it does seem to be a prolapse.

We have bought Margot in and bathed her and put some ointment on. We are going to leave her in a box in the porch for a few hours and then try pushing it back in again, hopefully the ointment will have shrunk it.

She doesn't appear to be in any pain which is good, she is quite perky so I am just keeping my fingers crossed that it isn't a serious prolapse.

Thank you so much for replying so promptly.

Sounds like it to me too, and it is best to treat it as soon as possible before an infection can get a hold. Wash it with warm water and a drop of tea tree oil and pop it back in, you will need to feel around inside to make sure that it is all in place.

Unfortunately, prolapses tend to recur, especially in frequent laying hybrids. You can give it a chance to heal by trying to stop her laying - take her off pellets and just feed her corn, keep her in the dark and it may stop her from laying for a day or so and give it a chance to heal.

The main thing is to keep her away from the other hens if the oviduct is hanging out, or they will peck it and make a dreadful mess.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice but after two nights of bathing and putting back in it kept coming out again. I took Margot to the vet and she was put down today.

I am very sad but the vet said there wasn't much that could be done.

Poor old Barbara is now our sole chicken until after christmas when we will get one or two to keep her company.

I am very impressed with the forum as I got replies so quickly in my time of chicken crisis.

I hope you have a very happy christmas!
