Lebkuchen

Recommended Posts

Lebkuchen (pronouned Leeb koochen)?!?! means gingerbread Sarah.

Leben is the verb to live and kuchen means cake. Lieben is the verb to love, so it could mean that too!

I don't have time to make all these nice things! Will print them off and put them in my Christmas folder for next year! :D:D:D

I think the ch is a k sound, I had lessons from a German friend on several VERY important words such as apfel strudel and Lebkuchen...:lol:

DS is impressed with these cookies - asked for them for breakfast, which is always a good sign!

I iced them as per the recipe than drizzled chocolate over them too, not enough left for the hampers nor for a photo, so may just have to make another batch!!:lol:

I did the half treacle/half honey recipe, thought the dough was a bit dry, but would that be because my scales are useless & not as accurate as they might be rather then the recipe?

Is it pronounced like tsch as in Zwetchen? I always got laughed at over Zwetchen Dachi & Bwurstl Baum. Or was it Pwurstl - I'm sure you'll know what I mean. Plus lots of other words including Spezi. Arrrgggh. :wall:

I am now wanting to go a Xmas market & get some Lebkuchen down my gullet! ( drool). Either that or get my gingerbread family cutters out. 8)

The "ch" when it follows a vowel is pronounced rather similarly to the way the Scots pronounce it in "Loch", and almost the same as the sound you might make in preparation for a spit. If you tried to make a "k" sound, but kept your tongue a little way away from the roof of your mouth and let the air pass through, you'd probably be making the right sound.
