jjo5555
the 3 girls arrived on Friday morning. Saturday lunchtime one of them went inside the eglu followed by the other two and spent about 20 mins in there. We thought something had scared them. Then they all came out and we found an egg? Small little thing with a thin shell and not much white but a very yellow yolk and it tasted fab. We were told not to expect eggs for 4 weeks or so. Have we got a bionic chicken? Also they don't seem to want treats (grapes, bread etc). How do people place them? On the ground or in a dish? Jason
Ain't Nobody Here
Welcome to the forum, Jason . Congratulations on your new girls and on a super fast first egg . It's not unheard of to get an egg that quickly but lots of people have to wait weeks and weeks for their first one, so you're really lucky . Re treats, if I'm giving them to the girls in their run I use a bowl (so any leftovers are easy to remove). If they're freeranging I chuck them all over the lawn or if their feet are clean, I'll sit on a bench and let them perch on my knees . Chickens seem to have different tastes just like humans so just try all sorts of things as treats and you'll find out what they like. Mine love grapes, dried mealworms, tomatoes & raisins for starters. (A tip, don't give them too much bread - I think it can block up their crops. Hope someone else can confirm/deny this?) jjo5555
Thanks all. What happens if all three want to lay at the same time. Do they take turns or do they all squeeze on? Still trying to figure things out.
Ain't Nobody Here
They will sometimes take turns or 2 can squeeze in a nestbox at once. Otherwise you may find one just laid on the roosting bars!
Snowy
Congratulations on your first egg! As they are still young, they will only ever have been fed pellet food so will be unfamiliar with 'treats'. Try them with one new food at a time - they will soon get to know which ones they like! If giving bread always soak it first as it can swell in their crop and cause a blockage.
Janty
Congratulations on your first egg so soon after getting your girls. I had to wait two months for an egg. Not that I'm or anything. Welcome to the forum, Jan
