the progress of our allotment...

Recommended Posts

we got the key to the allotments yesterday so today we went to drop some chicken poo off

and took a few more pics. There's one of all the windfalls from the overhanging apple tree, that'll be a bonus come next autumn :D

Just ordered our seed potatoes, onions and garlic from Thompson & Morgan. They have an allotment collection which comprises 3 early varieties and 3 maincrop varieties which seemed just the job :D

plus we got some free potatoes and free onions by spending over a certain amount :D

the far end of the lottie where the overhanging apple tree is...

all the allotments in our area are new...

we reckon we can get about 11 raised beds of approx 4-5ft wide by 7-8 ft long (mental calculation) in the space plus a shed and a little area for our niece to grow whatever she wants to :D

Looks good, do you have to travel to get to it?

it's roughly a mile away :D

Its very nice of you to give some space for your neice to grow stuff - inevitably sunflowers I guess!

good idea!

what's the orientation of the plot?

does it run north south etc and what side is the fence on?

you will have to think about what you plant at the tree end as the tree will suck a lot of nutrients and moisture out of the soil

thanks for the advice :D

DH is checking the orientation, he mentioned it the other day and we've decided to put the shed and a bench at the apple tree end :D

No worries... shed placement sounds very sensible

Fingers crossed its east west with the fence on the north side... if so I think you should have a fruit corridor all the way along it!!!!!

Ian (or "Two Sheds" as he is now known ;) ) has been hard at it down the allotment today! :D

He got some old flags and sleepers from freecycle so he's laid some of the flags as a base for the shed (which is coming next week) and started on his raised beds

The second raised bed is only laid out, he needs to dig the sleepers in. We decided to put the sehd at the near end as you can put your wellies on easier if it's there :D

very observant!

When the shed goes up, he's getting a little travel kettle set up in there and using his battery pack/starter thing from the camper van to make cuppas!

well, he's been at it again today :D

He's onto raised bed number 3 now! He's not gone right up to the fence with the side of the bed, so that he can plant things up the fence. Peas or whatever...
