Hedgehog Rescue

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

Around the UK are second birth hedgehogs who will not make it though the winter unless we help. Put out seed or dog or cat food which can be lifted each morning if it is still there.

If you find a small hedgehog you can help it is two ways either contact the Hedgehog Rescue in your area or the vets. Or find some where safe , dry and warm where you can keep it over the winter feeding and giving it water until it is Spring and then releasing it safely into your garden were it will help you with those pests the hens do not get.

We have just rescued a small hedgehog and contacted the hedgehog rescue in our area only to be told that there is a waiting list for places at their centre and told us how to keep it and help safe.

So apart from 2 boxer girl dogs , 9 hens we now have Junior the small hedgehog. He was found on our front lawn mid afternoon on Thursday 18 December by my better half and our sons, Junior is now in his own home within our conservatory.

Best wishes for Christmas and The New Year,

Best regards

awww! Any photos? Well done you - I'm not sure if I've got any hedgehogs or not, never seen them.

Hi Olly

I am sure you must have seen some in your area with those big eyes!!!:lol:

As soon as we have settled Junior in we will try and get some photos but do not think we will use a flash as it might cause a ball roll.

Missy our young boxer girl keeps on patrol letting us know of any movement from Junior or food time.

More news later

Best regards

Good luck with him (or her). We had one staying with us back in late October but sadly she didn't make it :(

Just make sure he or she is kept warm (a heat pad is good) and be aware of lungworm which a lot of the small ones are susceptable to, especially if they are seen out in the day. Also keep a look out for maggots and ticks which can kill the small ones too.

Hi everyone

Junior the Hedgehog now live in a very large bird cage with newspaper and towels on the base.

There is water, dry hedgehog food and cat food which Junior seems to like in two trays . In an other section were we have arranged a small cardboard box with a hole cut in it to allow Junior to use it as a bedroom.

There is hay in front of this to allow Junior to pull it into the box and make a nest.

Slowly Junior is putting weight on, thank goodness.

Best regards

Hedgehog keeping is soooooo much fun! I have an African Pygmy Hedgehog called Henrietta Tiggywinkle, who is probably the cutest thing on the planet!

If you are keeping a wild hedgehog safe over winter, it is a good idea to use flea powder designed for aviary birds, which is safe for hedgies....

The best thing to build them up is to add a few meal worms a day (Maybe 9/10) to their food..... live is by far the best idea, but dried are also good. Putting 'seed' out is absolutely no good as hedgies are proper carnivores.... just look at their 'fangs!'

Happy Hedgehog keeping!

Hi Everyone

Thank you for everyone who has tried to help us look after the wild hedgehog we found in our garden during the very cold weather. Alas we have to report that try as we might and our vets tried too, we lost our little hedgehog last night ( Saturday night / early Sunday morning 3rd / 4th January 2009.

As he died in his sleep. We are all very upset as at one time we had managed to get weight on him but last night he lost his fight for life.

To everyone every where who looks after hedgehogs we wish you all the luck in the world.

Best wishes for 2009.

Ian & Valerie
