Cinnamon
.....are the latest victim of the financial crisis They are looking for a rescue package, but it doesn't look good. Shame - super little shop & I always get a few bits & pieces for Christmas in there. Cleo is really upset as she loves the instant flavoured teas, especially the lemon & lime........... Egluntyne
Oh No! I always buy something there when I got to Meadowhell. What a shame.
Ygerna
Its a shame, I like Whittards but I suspect 'luxury' teas are something people cut back on in harsh times and when you can get nice teas and coffees at the supermarket with youe weekly shop too the incentive to go to Whittards isnt there either. Mrs Frugal
What a shame . It's so sad seeing these companies going under. I've bought lovely ceramics from Whittards and their Monsoon Malabar coffee is divine.
TAJ
I guess being owned by an Icelandic company is not good given their financial crisis currently. I love their teas and have bought a lot of Christmas prezzies from them. Tracy

chickenanne
It's amazing how fast some relatively large retail chains have fallen apart: Roseby's, woolies, MFI, The Pier, now this.... also very sad to see how many smaller non-chain coffee shops etc have gone out of business in our local town centre. So, what will be next? ... Woollies & Roseby's were known to be struggling for ages; MFI sells big expensive house things and now there's one less in the market so the rest will manage, The Pier was a big importer and therefore massively susceptable to exchange rates, Whittards is Icelandic-owned....maybe a carpet company? Or Laura Ashley?
Cinnamon
My money is on Superdrug Nothing you can buy there that you can't in Boots........
chickenanne
Actually, Superdrug is basically Boots, without such a good brand name.... could well be right, Cinamon! Almost tempted to say Homebase: their big ticket things (kitchens, bathrooms) never seem to be as good as those of the competitors, and neither is the furniture etc. Paints and the like are invariably cheaper in B&Q.... fowlbird
I was going to Habitat today, the one between Maidenhead and Sluff but apparently the shop has closed down I hope Habitat aren't going to be next turning up their toes. Half the problem is that these companies have relied on us all constantly updating our homes (not me of course) and these days not many people are going to be doing that. I suppose the time to panic is when Ikea goes bust
Egluntyne
I popped down to a local garden centre today to buy Christmas tree lights (don't ask) and I got some which had been reduced from £29.99 (all singing, all dancing) to £14.99 and when I got to the till they were £8.99. Their Christmas decs were fab and all marked down too so I filled up my basket. In the end I got over £60 worth of stuff for £17.99. No wonder firms are going bust if they have to offer this kind of discount. They will be paying us to take the stuff away soon. Such a shame. This garden centre is a family owned one and is super. I do hope they don't go to the wall.
Paola
I was shocked and saddened this morning watching the news when I heard this I wonder if the government could have done something to prevent what is going on at the mo
Phonix
aww I love Wittards - espesh the white choc hot choc! mmm! So am I the only one that prefers Superdrug to Boots! Just as good stuff but for a fraction of the price! x
craftyhunnypie
I like superdrug too - they have some good bits & bobs and their own ranges of cosmetics & body products are good. Emma.x
Cinnamon
The Superdrug thing is just a vague prediction on my part - don't read anything into it!
Tessa the Duchess
Just heard on the news that Whittards has been bought by a group of venture capitalists, so whether they will keep it on as it is or change it into something else is anybody's guess. I have heard rumours that both Currys and PC World could be in trouble come the new year. I think a lot of businesses will go bust after christmas, a lot are just hanging on through the christmas period hoping to make money. Chook n Boo Mum
Aren't they the same company, so if one goes the other will too I'd have thought? Sha x
chickenanne
Curry's have always made lots of profit in the past, and they do have a good cashflow.... I'm not convinced they'll go under. However, as I've no said that, gauranteed that they will!
fowlbird
Just heard on the news that Whittards has been bought by a group of venture capitalists venture capitalists - I blame them for most things... short term profits and no long term plans
craftyhunnypie
I wonder if Adams the childrens clothes shop is in trouble - they have 70% off today! I wonder about BHS too, as they can be a bit old fashioned in the clothing department. It all depends on who owns them to be honest. Wonder what will become of our high streets & shopping centres? Emma.x I think it also depends on who shops there, whether or not companies are going to be able to hang on to their customers. Heard too that charity shops are suffering - not enough donations of clothes, fewer shoppers... certainly the face of UK shopping is going to change but for better or worse? Lesley
Whittards recently stopped making the onlt two teas I could drink - because they don't taste anything like tea. They replaced them with a similar but disgusting version..........so consequently, I haven't been in there for some time. Still sad to see if go if it doesn't work out. crazygal
Another shop bites the dust..... I know its not nice to predict which high street shops will be next but I think that WH Smith might be a real shocker- the high street shops will close but the airport/railway station shops will remain....(i'm Mystic Meg in disguise! ) Also Past Times...is past it in my opinion. And Cargo - that homeware store... Apologies to anyone who works in those shops, I hope I'm wrong...
