Plum
Help. Grackle is a bit puffed up and not interested in food. She laid an egg yesterday. Shes got a big crop this morning so Im going to give her olive oil and massage it, what else do I need to do? I'll search posts later but its manic today and I'm scared. Thanks
Snowy
Oh no, poor you and Grackle, what a day for things to go wrong! First feel her crop - is it hard or squishy? If hard it is more likely to be impacted,if squishy and her breath smells, suspect sourcrop. Try the oil and a massage, may be worth bringing her in and keeping her warm. If you can get hold of live maggots, they are supposed to help with the impaction. Hope this helps to start with!
Plum
Thanks Snowy, Ive given her the oil and couldn't massage the crop its quite hard but not as big as I thought it was. Her breath doesn't smell and shes gone out and digging in borders and looks quite bright, perhaps I panicked. I'll see if I can get some live mealworms, there's a fishing shop locally. Plum
Thankfully at last her crop was empty this morning and she went straight for her food. Big relief. All straw now gone from nest. Stupid thing was I'd got hemcore and was just using up the last of the bag of straw. Why didn't I listen to all that had been said about not using straw. Will listen in future my wise friends. They had a great time yesterday with their christmas cake of spaghetti, mealworms, grapes, chopped sprouts with a cherry tomato and lettuce on top. Nothing like seeing them flinging spaghetti around and highnecking it with a grape in beak and two nuts chasing after in hot pursuit.
