Cyber Chook
Hello again, just thought of another question, which is, how do people actually drill through whole cabbages to hang them up in the run? I tear off leaves at the moment, and stuff them into a sort of holder thing, but would prefer just to put a whole cabbage in there. Do you use a proper electric drill ??! Snowy
I use a large darning needle and just thread string through the top of the stem.
Angels4
What a great question. I've often thought the same thing, and the thought of me using a power tool is laughable.
MadMitch
I just wrap a bit of wire or string under all the top leaves and this is enough to hold it up.
Redwing
I tie string to a plastic tent peg and hammer it in!
Ain't Nobody Here
What a great question. I've often thought the same thing, and the thought of me using a power tool is laughable. Don't curling tongs and a hairdrier count ? I use green garden wire and wrap it under leaves then hang it off the run roof.
Egluntyne
I'm bone idle and do none of those things, I just lob the cabbage into the run. They can amuse themselves with a game of footie before they get down to eating it. They don't object as there is never much left to speak of other than a few leaf skeletons. Phoebe
I hung some up with string but they totally ignored it. I s it worth trying again? (It was their first whole day in their new home)
Cyber Chook
I hung some up with string but they totally ignored it. I s it worth trying again? (It was their first whole day in their new home) Loving the seasonal names . Yes, I'd think if you leave it up for a few days they'll eventually get the idea. About chucking the cabbage straight in, Egluntine, I'm with you on the labour-saving, but their run is a bit muddy and poo-ey at the moment. We had a run built recently, and haven't finshed laying down slabs in it, so they scratch around on the mud and within hours the hemcore/wood chippings disappear into a muddy, poo-ey soup. Would it be okay healthy-chicken-wise for the cabbage to roll around in this? I do try not to be too precious about my chooks, but it is scarily mucky in there Caroline

I'm often heard muttering some colorful language (under my breath) because I keep burning myself.
blackgold
mine are in a concrete run at the moment. first time i put a whole cabbage in they were terrified of it but not now and tug it all over the place. One cabbage lasts about 3 days....I hang up corn on the cob and that lasts about ten minutes....
Trish
when my chooks were new they wouldn't touch a whole cabbage, obviously never seen anything like it. For a week or two I chopped everything we gave them into fine strips, which they seemed much happier to try. Once they got the idea that the stuff in the big lump was the same they were happy about the whole cabbage. Sometimes we chuck one into the run and other times we hang it up, all adds to the fun
Cinnamon
I have an eye hook attatched to the top of the pen, with a chain hanging down with a big screw hook on the end, which I just screw into the base of the vegetable.
