A Christmas Present Shared

Recommended Posts

Now I have worked out how to put the photos on the forum, I thought you might like to share my wonderful Christmas Present from my very artistic daughter. Sadly, Evangeline (Miss Pepperpot) is no longer with us, but apart from that these are my chickens, cat, fish (and spiders!) in my garden....

It was the middle of winter and very, very cold. An icy wind wa blowing from the East, and the for the first time, the chickens were grateful for the winter shade that had appeared over their run.

While they did not completely understand the concept of Christmas, they could not miss the twinkling lights which appeared in the windows of the big houses, or ignore the delicious smiells wafting from the kitchen, which seemed to produce an increasing number of delicious snacks for the chickens to enjoy,

Each morning when they were let out to stretch their legs, they'd race to the catflap to see what tasty treats were on offer, before spending the rest of the day pottering about the frosty garden, exploring the bushes and pecking for worms in the dirt.

One evening, shortly after the chickens had settled down in the nest box for the night they heard a scrabbling sound at the side of the Eglu. At first they were quite alarmed. They had heard tales of unfriendly foxes, but then they recognised the miaow of their friend Eliot.

'You'll never guess what'. he purred, 'we've all been invited to a Christmas party!'

Excitement about the party spread rapidly through the neighbourhood and became everybody's favourite topic of conversation. It was decided that it would be held in the garden of number 23, so that all the local pond life could also attend comfortably, and everyone started working on ideas for food and entertainment.

Everyone set to work with the preparations for the party fashioning decorations and gathering food saved from their own meals with the occasional Christmas treat from the human's kitchen table.

The spiders were put in charge of the decorations and the goldfish were seen enthusiastically practising their synchronised swimming routine. When Christmas Eve arrived, everything was ready and everyone wernt home to get ready for the night ahead. The chickens hurried back to the eglu excitedly - they had one final thing to prepare!

As the sky darkened, and the oudoor Christmas lights were turned on, the guests arrived, coats brushed, feathers fluffed and scales shining. The food was quickly consumed, and the goldfishes' excellent routine soon had everyone dancing and singing festive songs.

As dawn arrived, the chickens decided it was time for their surprise......it was a mountain of eggs!

'There is one for each of you', they announced, 'and you all get an egg cosy - they are all the rage in the big house!'

As the sky began to lighten, the weary guests climbed back over their fences, through their catflaps, into their runs and hutches and curled up to sleep, dreaming of all the leftovers they would be spoiled with over the next few days......

Merry Christmas Everyone!
