What Colour Egg From A Bluebelle?

Recommended Posts

We added more hybrids to our flock on November 5th. Violet, our Bluebelle has excellent face furniture and has been crouching for about three weeks. Juliet (Sussex Star) isn't as well developed but has been crouching for about two weeks.

One day last week there was a strange looking egg in the nest box and I couldn't decide who it belonged to. My Speckled Star lays dark speckled eggs and my Amber Star lays speckled eggs that are lighter and rounder. My Bovans Goldline lays eggs that look like they've got white confetti on but she's moulting and hasn't laid for weeks. This weird egg had bigger speckles than the Speckled Star & Amber Star eggs but couldn't have been their's because they laid too, and it had the confetti I normally see on the Goldlines.

Would a chicken coming out of a moult start laying a different colour egg than they did previously? Or could a Bluebelle lay a speckledy confetti egg? Or could it belong to the Sussex Star?

To add to the confusion for the last three days there has been a really small egg in the nest box. All have been a pale pinky brown colour. I know for certain these tiny eggs must be from either Juliet or Violet but I haven't a clue which! And whoever laid the speckledy confetti egg hasn't laid another since.

I would hazard a guess that the pinky/brown egg would be from the bluebelle - they are supposed to lay an egg with a plum blush! And yes, a hen coming out of a moult may lay eggs a different colour to normal at first. But the only real way of knowing would be to catch them in the act! :D Two of my new four have just started to lay and it's really frustrating not knowing who it is!

Griffin, I think I own a sister to your Bluebelle, as I bought mine 3 days after your own and I'm also in Oxfordshire (I recognise that list of breeds, too). Agnes lays light-brown eggs, sometimes with a pinky colour. She's a good layer, and definitely head chicken of my little flock!

She didn't come from Cotswold Chickens, my first lot of chickens did but the latest ones were from Mother Hens Poultry because they has Columbines too and Cotswold don't. I expect they might've originally started out in the same place though.

My Violet Bluebelle can expect some Bluebelle sisters because some Bluebelle eggs are going in my incubator on Saturday so fingers crossed!

And I still haven't figured out which egg is hers!

no egg today :( there were too softies in the poop tray so I think both the new girls had a blip this morning.

my bluebelle egg is under 'Dory has laid her 1st egg' in this egg section, there's a picture there, although it is her very first egg so the colour can change.
