URGENT problem with new chicken! (why is it always us???)

Recommended Posts

Sorry to hear you've got a poorly girl.

Thought you might find this idea helpful:

Everytime me or my partner gets a £2 coin, it is put in a separate pot for the chickens. As far as we are concerned you can never spend a £2 coin. You would be amazed how quickly this builds up. Our chickens currently have over £100 so next time they need any treatment, they can pay with their own account :D

Good luck and keep us posted.

Great idea I going to do that to but think might use £5 notes:| !

yes but only for tomorrow at 4pm, so hopefully they can hang on that long! the vet wont know what mycoplasma is i dont think, so im going to print off a page for her. i dont think minnie has blackhead (i think i was being a bit overdramatic ) but i think she does have worms, as it might explain the depression.

just gone to the vets with willow and my dog holly. we were going to take minnie but when i went out tday she was perfectly fine, pecking and mooching around outside, so i think she was going over a dodgy spell. if anything changes ill take her, but she seems perfectly healthy, though we will be worming them tomorrow.

holly came away with some tablets as the silly girl chewed at her feet too much and ripped loads of skin off so its all sore. of course, she stopped limping as soon as we got to the vets

willow has been very perky today and seems to be improving, she now can open her eyes all day. they do close up, but only overnight while she has them closed to sleep.

shes on baytril for a week, so HOPEFULLY she should be fine. he made a big hullabullo about the baytril, saying that we have to wash our hands straight after and not let any of the other chicks have it etc. etc. i didnt know it was that toxic to humans

Well lets hope the Baytril does the trick; it should do. Like any medicine you should take precautions when using it, and washing your hands afterwards is really common sense. If you have to syringe the Baytril into Willow then wash the syringe afterwards as well. It sounds like good news on Minnie and paws crossed for Holly! Just keep an eye on the flock. If any of the others start to show similar symptoms to Willow they will need to be treated as well right away. Lets hope your luck changes now :)

Well I wasnt sure if he would know what Mycoplasma was, as I dont know if its a chicken disease (and its not a poultry vet) or if it affects other animals, so when we went in with her he asked me what was wrong and I said 'I think she has Mycoplasma'.

He checked her over but he must have taken my word for it, because he didnt say anything else that it could be (this is a very cheap vet which is quite unprofessional at times, but the only vet that will treat chickens relatively near me)

Her symptoms all point to it so i'm pretty sure she does have it, anyway.

Good thing you have Claretvet and Egluntinevet on here. :D

When I looked it up there are a lot of strains so affects humans as well. May be the reason the vet said about washing your hands well, but it is a different organism.

But also with antibiotics, handling these drugs exposes other organisms to small contact with the antibiotics and this leads to resistant bugs and over time thats partly how superbugs have come about.

She should improve now that she's on anti-biotics, kep any eye on her though, because if myco is left for a while before going to the vet, the chook sometimes needs a longer course of Baytril or an alternative called Tylan.

It helps to keep the chooks dosed up in the winter - I make sure that mine have citricidal in their water and garlic powder in the feed, it seems to keep them healthy.
