How Quickly Does Albendazole Work?

Morning everyone

I have just gone to collect the eggs and found a right mess in the nest box, it looks like egg yolk and goo of some sort along with fresh blood streaks all around the nest box. All of the girls have blood on their feet (assume they have been walking in nest box). Whilst looking in the box Dora came in and it was obvious where the blood was from, it looks like the base of her tail feathers, maybe pecking by the others? They have been together since september with no prblems at all, Dora isnt laying yet, the other three are, just.

 

Help needed please, I have shut Dora in the cube. She looks ok, what should I do?

Can you bring her in and give her a gentle wash to see where she is bleeding from??? have you got any purple spray or tea tree oil to use on her?

She is bleeding at the base of her tail feathers. Where can i get purple spray from? if i cant find any i can get t tree, do i dilute it?

where ever you get your chook supplies may have purple spray........ but dilute the tea tree as it's a good antisepic....

 

I would give her a wash and keep her separated until it's stopped..... poor little love... has she been pecked???

you have my sympathies, sounds like what we are going through, but you have found it out much sooner than we did. Well done!! Hope shes better soon

Is it okay to use tea tree on chickens then? I know that it's very poisonous for cats because my vet told me never to use it on them. Handy to know it's safe for the chooks if ever I need to...

Dilute it well,

You can usually get purple spray or purple Aloe spray at most horsey places. some pet shops too.

I would def keep her apart somewhere warm, until you know what is going on, and she is healed or they will keep on at an open wound.

do you think she may have had a prolapse & the others pecked it?

just re read. maybe Dora has just laid her 1st one & it was a softee. yummy warm egg & the others swooped on it then carried on at her while she was expelling the rest.

I wondered about the soft egg theory as well, it looks like they have pecked her, there is no evidence of shell just yolk and goo. I have managed to borrow some purple spray so will use that when I get home. She has been seperated in the cube all day so im hoping she will have rested, we have the old hen house still so she can go in to that for a day or two untill she heals. I m so sad about all this as they have always got along so well with no problems, I really hope this is a one off xx

I had something similar not so long ago, and so far so good, purple spray and ukadex did the trick!

Bring her in and bathe it with either warm salty water or water with a couple of drops of tea tree oil in it.

 

Have a good look and see what's wrong, then post back here and I'll tell you what needs to be done.

 

At any rate, if she is bleeding or shows any bloody areas, she will need to be segregated from the others until it has either stopped, or you have disguised it with purple spray if that is possible. Another good one to use is Stockholm tar, but that's a bit yucky to apply. She would also benefit from some Arnica pillules if you have them.

Ohhhhhhhhhh interested in the arnica Claret, how would you suggest using that?

Arnica 1 pill 3x daily.

THEY WILL HAVE EATEN TheSOFT SHELL IF SHE PASSED IT, OR SHE COULD PASS IT OVERNIGHT OR BY NOW (sorry caps lock on).

I have just got her out of the nest box, she is nice and perky, the bleeding looks to have stopped but she looks a bit raw, it is def near her feathers not near the bottom end. Whilst getting her out I noticed half an egg underneath the roosting bars. I have now put her in the dogs run (dog removed first!) it is all covered with a sleeping area so she should be ok, my hubby is bringing some purple spray home. Do I just spray it on? If it is soft first egg can this happen again? the shell i found looked normal but half missing. Sorry for the rant, Im worried about my lovely girl

Phew! I am pleased to hear that she's doing ok!

 

Yup, just spray it on, but try not to get in on your hands or clothing as it doesn't come off of either very easily!

Yes she is all tucked up in the dogs house. I will try putting her back in tomorrow, im at home all day so can keep an eye on her x

Morning everyone

I am very glad to report that Dora is quite ok this morning, if not a bit clingy! (she has started coming to us to be picked up!!) No sign of fresh bleeding, so I put her back in with the others. Within a couple of minutes Henny (maran) pecked her right on the poorly bit, so I took her straight out again. Maybe I didnt put enough purple spray on?? I plan to leave her out for a couple of days and let it heal up, the dog is thrilled as it means she gets to stay in the kitchen as the chook is lodging in her kennel!!

if it is obvious pecking get some anti peck spray........ obviously you can't the the heavy duty stuff over the weekend. But pop to a pet shop and get some anti bite/chew spray they do for dogs. I think johnsons does one or pets at home may do their own. It worked well on Hazel until I got some ukadex, not a problem since!

 

If you've time try and get some, as I think the longer she is seperated the harder it is...

Dora is back with her family! I covered her with anti peck spray, Henny (top girl) pecked her but squarked at the taste and flew off!!!! I keep checking and they seem to be playing nicely but time will tell.
