My grandad and I both have Eglus and my nan is always going on about my cousin who has a 'proper' chicken house!

At the end of the day both are fit for purpose (apart from some of the terrible imports!) and its personal choice as to which you choose. There are some people who take it too far though but then you get those who are extreme on any subject :D

And in the red corner...wooden coop owners!

Whatever your opinions, i am pleased with both Eglus AND wooden coops. The fact of the matter is, Eglus are easy, clean ways for families with little time or space who want to keep chickens. The eglu is a great thing because it allows these people to see how easy chicken keeping can be!

Im very pleased with my wooden coop, and I wouldnt get an Eglu myself, but I respect the omlet people for what they have done, because now after 2008 loads of people have started to keep chickens!

Even breeders roll their eyes  when we tell them what we have the girls living in...so its not just some wooden house owners.

Some people like eglu's some dont......it's the way of the world.

What is unique about us all is our universal love of chickens and that's all that matters :wink:

Oh, and Im far from posh or a yuppy...

i have to say i'm a bit of an oddball i've gone from a badly chosen wooden house to an eglu to a much better chosen wooden house

The better chosen wooden house also came with a large walk in run.

i loved the eglu when i had it however as i had four girls i couldn't stand the WW3 that broke out about the nesting box. Two of my chooks were nest builders and would take about 2 hours sitting on the nest to lay their egg. Most of the day was spent with different chickens hauling each other out usually by their bum feathers and we ended up with eggs everywhere.

The other problem i have is though it is easy to clean with 4 chooks it needed cleaning every other day and the lifting and bending that this involved was terrible on my back. i still have my eglu and i do like it but i just couldn't cope with the fights and couldn't afford to shell out the money i would have had to with the cube ontop of wanting a walk in run so that every time somthing happened in the run or the sods stole somthing and dumpt it in the middle i wouldn't have to climb through that tiny door....

So i'm quite happy with my wooden house and due to the fact it has removable perches and a removeable floor it's quite easy to take appart and give it a really good clean.

i think it's silly for people to be sooo horrid about the eglu it's just a different style of house.

I like both - some of the wooden coops are just lovely....

and I love the funky look of the eglu.

However I went for the cube for the increased size of the eglu and chose it over a wooden one purely for the ease of care.

I've kept ferrets for years in a outdoor court and have begun to hate the cleaning of it and the annual maintenance ritual of re-treating and repairs... couldn't face doing it with a chicken coup aswell!

I quite agree Chelsea. I think what really gets to me (or - used to) is that Egluowners don't generally constantly criticise people who buy wooden coops :? We're all making a good job of caring for hens - what is their problem?

I used to have a wooden coop, now I have an eglu which I much prefer :D

What I don't understand is why the vehement anti eglu brigade feel so certain that I require 'education'!

I wouldn't dream of criticising another person's belongings or life choices so aggressively!

I like one type of housing...they like another. Both are better than battery housing, both are considered suitable by the RSPCA.

Yet, I have been condemned, even shouted at by people who, it turned out, had never even seen an eglu! What is it about my pretty pink eglu that makes them so angry?

Last year at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show there was a guy there showing his wooden chicken houses. They were really big, posh affairs and looked beautiful, so I stopped for a nosey and the chap started 'selling' to me.

He gave me a leaflet so that 'when my current wooden coop falls apart - as it will do - you can buy one of mine' I told him that mine wouldn't fall apart as I have eglus - and he almost spat at me !! He then went into a long stream about how awful they were, and said that as they were plastic they would be too cold in winter and would MELT in the hot sunny weather !! He claimed that the eglus were mass produced in China, and that the 'Grow Your Own' garden mag that came out last year was created by Omlet as no other mag. would allow them to advertise the eglu. He finished of with 'the eglu is single handed destroying the poultry industry' - wow, to have that much power, eh.

I put him right on as many points as I could but he kept trying to shout me down, so in the end I simply said that unless he had actually used a product and was talking from genuine experience then he had no right to make such comments, and then told him he was talking out of his a**e and walked away. I felt I was :wall: .

:?

Eh? so the huge INCREASE in people owning chickens, buying new chickens, buying chicken feed, buying chicken-related products and so on is destroying the poultry industry?

It might mean that fewer people are buying battery eggs ...

When I pointed out that flaw in his argument, he did get a bit flustered and then just talked louder at me.

I must admit, that was my first experience of someone from the 'anti eglu brigade' and I really was quite shocked by his reaction - I mean, it's only a chicken house, for heavens sake (although a fantastic one, but you know what I mean).
