lisa33
I'm very unhappy. I was out walking my dog in Oughtonhead Common, in Hitchin, this morning when I found a beautiful black and gold chicken. I don't know what breed she/he is. It was quite young with a rose type comb on her and very long wing feathers but no spurs. She made all the right chicken noises. She was stunning. Andyman and I have spent the last three hours trying to catch her. Unfortunately it is all hedges and brambles where she is. Andyman and I are covered in blood, and scratches and bruises. We still have not got her. I have had to give up. I have my own chicken to clean and the guineapig that I'm looking after and the Jasdog to walk properly. I feel like an absolute failure. Oughtonhead has loads of foxes living there. I can't see her lasting the night. I will try again if she's still around when I take Jas out later but I'm not at all optimistic. Groovychook
Ahh, the poor little thing! Hope you're successful later Could you take some corn to rattle?
lisa33
Already tried that. Andy made a net too but that didn't work either. I will see what I can do later.
Janty
Do you know anybody with a big fishing net and pole. That might be easier to manoeuvre.
Egluntyne
Just going to suggest the same thing. I use OS's landing net to catch my two awkward girls. Works every time. Scatter a bit of mixed corn...she'll come running. Good luck.
Guest
maybe she's wary of the dog, can you go out without the dog and try again?

lisa33
When Andy came to help me catch her we put the dog in the car. We tried corn but she wasn't that bothered. Andy then took the dog home and made a net on a pole but that didn't get her either she just went deeper into the brambles. I went back about 2 o'clock but could n't find her any where. I did see the fox though (but no feathers anywhere either). I'm going to go back in about 15 minutes when it's a bit darker to see if I can see her and catch her. I'm not feeling very optimistic, but I won't give up (yet).

helenmb
Hopefully she will roost up high in a nice safe tree or high bush ready for you to try again tomorrow. Good luck!

lisa33
Just got back. I found a scattering of her feathers including the beautiful long ones. I guess that she wasn't as good as avoiding Mr Fox as she was at avoiding me & Andy. Thanks for all your kind wishes though.
