Free Range Meat

Recommended Posts

After reading Poet's thread on co-op sausages and lovemychook's reply about "outdoor reared" pigs I found this from Saturday's Telegraph

http://www.laverstokepark.co.uk/home

The meat is expensive but if you check out how all his animals (including hens) live it's not surprising, and I'd rather go without than eat intensively produced animals.

He also has his own slaughterhouse and has researched and implemented low stress conditions.

I'm going to give it a try and stock up for next month.

Has anybody living near there tried the shop?

I can buy a whole, free range chicke from a local farm for about £7-8 depending on weight.

Thanks Claret, Morrisons do them even cheaper and I have no end of local producers here in Cumbria .... no, I was concerned more with the pork and I have to consider what happens to calves born to milk producing cows.

I was taken with the buffalo, especially the cheese and the milk.

Sainsbury's have whole free range chickens (they name the farms they come from) - from about £6 - depending on size.

They now also have free range thighs, and some other cuts

- but never wings - what ever happens to these ??(I know they're the cheapest bits but I miss having them as I can never find free range ones)

Waitrose do free range chicken wing packs, about 8 in a pack I believe.

You can buy wings online from http://www.sheepdrove.com - in pack size of your choice. I buy them for the dog, in packs of 2. They also do 'Doggy Bags' and all sorts of offal - we had a massive Ox Heart from them. Excellent delivery service as well.

If we send our table birds to the next farm to be plucked then they always come back without wings - ahter plucking a few ourselves we can understand why

I remember when Hugh set up his barns last year that he wasn't happy about the chicks being thrown out - but he was told it is the best way to get them out without any injuries. It doesn't look nice though :(

you might be surprised at what free range food is avalable to you locally, I found places I didn't know existed by using the post code search on http://www.freerangereview.com

I tried that, Poet, but unfortunately, they didn't have the farm shop about 4 miles away that I know about but suggested places that are over 40 miles from me...not very local!

I think the distances must be as the crow flies :? as they said one was 17 miles away from me yet I know it's nowhere like that as it would take me 3/4 hour down the motorway to get there.
