lord-harry-bantam
when i recived my two new chickens from Omlet, (Hilda and Betty) i noticed that Betty is a much much much darker russet red colour than my other two gingernuts. she has lots of black feathers at her tail too. could she possibly be the black rock hybrid instead of gingernut? her plumage is much different to any gingernut ive seen before. quickcluck
I think there maybe slightly varieties depending on where they come from.... There's one with white tail feathers, and I have one with black tail feathers, Hazel, she is lurvely.....
Chickvic
I have a ginger and white one with very fluffy knickers and a really russet one with no white or black feathers.
TAJ
It does sound like a Miss Pepperpot colour wise.
Snowy
She's either a very dark gingernut, or a very ginger pepperpot! Would love to see a pic!
Plum
My two gingernuts are quite different as well. One is like you describe slighter build and black feathers in her tail and wings and a few black ends to feathers around her neck, the other is the same with white where the black is and more mumsy build. Pepperpot is quite deffinately black with ginger trim.
lord-harry-bantam
ill get a picture on here soon. but im convinced she is a black rock chicken. they match the description with colour, tail feather colour, egg colour too. Cinnamon
Whwn I got my first hens I asked for the 2 Gingernuts to be as differnet from each other as possible, & got one with lots of white & one with lots of black. The one with lots of black had heaps of black feathers, & was gorgeous. I don't think you have a Pepperpot, as they have beetle greenish black feathers, with only a little bit of ginger around the neck sometimes. Egluntyne
Mine have all been very different...from auburn to almost blonde. One with a white tail. One with a solitary black feather in her tail. Atilla the Hen had the black tail feathers you describe. No two are the same. Handy for identification when you have a few.
The Dogmother
Whe you see them all together in the pens, you realise just how different they can be - some are quite 'blonde' while others are rather deep browny red like their RIR ancestors
feemcg
Gingernuts are Rhode Island Red/ Light Sussex crosses and are sex-linked - the boys and girls hatch different colours (so the boys can be culled at hatch). I hatched my own . The boys are white, the girls ginger.
