What are you sowing now?

Recommended Posts

They're in the greenhouse in a heated propagator all snuggled for the night. :D That's when we had a little shower - timed it right, already spent the rest of the day digging the new bed over. We are on clay here but next door has a chalky border. Then what did I find? Huge stones, bricks, gravel, flint and enormous blocks of chalk and only a tiny bit of clay. I guess we are on that halfway marker.

Awww puppypuppypuppies! Whoohoo!

Just noticed it's drizzling now.

Hi

I feel better too! I've been down to the allotment and dug several beds over and oh did some beds as well! Lovely to be in fresh air and i'd forgotten how nice the earth smells!

We didnt have any showers luckily. I would have sown some seeds today but have run out of seed compost . Hope to do some sowing this week but as its half term I will try not to be too disappointed if it doesnt get done!!!!!

Thank goodness it was a little warmer

Hi Sue

Sorry to be so annoying but you and your dog are doing great things_ 7 puppies?

any more do you think ? I am so lucky i didnt have 7 babies at once!!!

Plenty of time to do sowing etc! apparently ( according to my neighbour) it should be nice weather for a couple of days- so all isn't lost!

picked up a brand new galavanized windowsill herb trough, plus compost, plus 3 packets of seeds; sweet basil, chives and flat leaf parsley, in our 'Help the Aged' charity shop today for £1.95 the lot, so planted that up.

Also sowed some chilli 'shake', chilli 'anaheim', tomato 'gartenperle' (a tumbling variety so hopefully can transplant to hanging baskets), oriental mixed salad leaves and some more sweet basil.

Don't worry Snowy - there is plenty of time - Mother Nature is running late this year anyway. Couldn't find my Golden Californian peppers so had to order more. The parcel arrived yesterday along with lots of others including parsnips - at the same time my Heritage seeds arrived, so I am going through them to see what needs to be done first. I couldn't think why my potting tray was so low - then I realised that the freezer tray that I use to lift it up to my height is upside down in the garden protecting some plants from the girls.

Been busy in the greenhouse:

Peppers – one unknown but from seed saved, so possibly Californian Golden Wonder again. Soror Sarek, also saved seed, and definitely Californian Golden Wonder from new seed.

Tomato – Scarlet Knight, Hillbilly and Cheetham’s Potato Leaf.

Artichoke – Purple Globe and the remaining seeds of Green Globe

Aubergine – Bambino

Onion – Red Baron, Sturon and Heritage seed Up to Date

Beetroot – Bull’s Blood and Detroit 2 Bolivar

Cauliflower – Snowball and old seed All the Year Round

Salad Rocket – the seeds are extremely ancient.

Celeriac – Prinz

Brussels Sprout – Darkmar 2

Lettuce – Bedford

I have 2 little tomato plants sprouted from the seeds sown the other day - both Sungold!

Still to do - Broad Beans - and then I'm done. I came indoors because Cheyenne is creating a racket and has been doing so for the last 15 minutes in spite of handing out mealworms and telling her to shush. So I have been updating my kitchen garden diary on the computer while hiding from the neighbours.

Today did shallot sets (late but I was worried about rot earlier because its been so wet) and some early carrots and peas ouside. Nothing inside yet as I find I have no potting compost :wall: .

Spudded between the garlic and onions today and planted 2 more rows of garlic yesterday

Its so nice to be able to get outside again without feeezing to death.. :D

Got my red onions in today.

I am holding off sowing my seeds for at least a month as my greenhouse isn't heated & I have a suspicion that we haven't seen the last of the cold weather :?

Phoebe, if you plant your onions/shallots/Garlic in peaks & troughs, with the set in the peak, then the extra wet should drain off into the trough. Thats what I always do with these anyhow.

Planted some brussel sprouts and courgettes, Planted up a hanging basket with some petunias and trailing fushias. It is now hung up in the conservatory with the other 2 from last year that have a dark red pelagonium and various trailing fushias in. All have been in the heated green house and are from last year. They are just starting to sprout new leaves. I potted on some geranium cuttings that are getting going now. My plum tom seeds have sprouted even though the seeds are 2 years old. Was going to clean the glass of the smaller unheated greenhouse but ran out of energy....... Them chickens got into trouble today as I was balancing the hanging basket on a buscket while I put the plug plants in and they wouldnt leave me alone. Then Oospy jumped up and tried to eat my baby petunias........Had a really lovely day but am now stiff and tired out but still who cares. Have daffodils in flower and crocus and yellow broom, snow drops nearly finsihed. I have a pot of rhubarb in the greenhouse with nearly enough leaves for a crumble,,,,,, Love Sue xxx

It is much too early up here to plant anything and especially in a cold unheated greenhouse which I have - when I do get them sown/planted I have large polystyrene boxes with lids and I put the seed trays in the boxes and put the lids on at night and off during the day in case of frost which happens late up here. Just keeps things warmer

Thanks for that; i shall try it in future.

Its probably too early for seeds here too, but I thought I'd give it a go !

Went to the garden centre yesterday and bought the shop - but I got my Red Californian Wonder pepper seeds and sown them today. Could I find my bloomin' broad beans? No so I had to pop up the road for a new packet. Hmmph! I'll be doing those tomorrow. I now have 6 Sungolds about an inch high, one Tigerella and one Salt Spring Sunrise. So we will have a few toms this year! :D
