Eglu and composter

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question. I am having to re-arrange my garden slightly to accomodate the eglu. Just wondered if a composter can go near the eglu. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it can't. If it can't go there i don't know where to put it. Can anyone clarify??

Many thanks

Found this:

"We are in the process of buying chickens for our home. We have a small garden, where should we site our compost bin?

Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) advise that if you keep poultry, you may compost your kitchen s"Ooops, word censored!"s at home but you must do so in an enclosed container. However, they do not specify the distance at which the compost bin should be placed away from the chickens or chicken coup.

As long as the chickens do not have access to the decomposing material, the bin can be placed anywhere within your garden.

For more detailed information on this you can visit the Defra Website: http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/waste/topics/kitchen.htm . "

This is from www.recylenow.com. Local councils work with this site to provide cheap composters and accessories.

Oh dear! I'm afraid my chickens love nothing better than scratching away at an old compost heap! I put my composting into plastic bins, I have three, but the previous owners of my house just had a huge heap in the corner of the garden which I still haven't cleared away. It's chook heaven, judging by the way they rush towards it when they're out of the run.

We don't have lids on our compost nor our chickens!

The chooks scoot through the stock-proof but obviously not chook-proof fencing & spend many a happy hour scratching through the grass clippings & veg peelings, searching for bugs. I never gave it a second thought....... I'm in the process of moving the latest heap into a container made of pallets, owing to it being in the middle of my veg patch  , but that won't have a lid on it either. Will be a real bind if I have to sort something out for it!

The other heaps (yes there is more than 1  , we haven't had a proper veg patch for years but have always kept a compost heap!!) are gradually being dug into the veg patch - with the chooks assistance as well!

I'm sure it will be ok next to the eglu. Just don't put cooked food on the compost to attract rats (which I'm sure you don't do anyway).

My only thought would be will the composter be close to your neighbouring fence too? I can just see it now as one great big stepping stone to freedom, hop onto eglu, hop up onto compost bin, hop over a low fence...
