Happy chickens! Posted February 9, 2009 Share Posted February 9, 2009 Until I got my chicken addiction, my main other time wasting occupation was helping out at a local sports club. They are in the middle of a major revamp of the clubhouse which will be fab, but need opinions please!! There are two function rooms, a 'posh' one upstairs and a more basic one downstairs which gets let out eg for kids parties, art groups, martial arts as well as for club members' sporting teas etc. The plan following the upgrade is to have the downstairs one carpeted as well as upstairs. I just think 'ugh' to this given what it is used for, but don't want to embarass myself (again ) in committee meetings when everyone thinks I'm barking up the wrong tree!! chooklady Posted February 9, 2009 Share Posted February 9, 2009 We replaced our hallway with laminate and I'm sooooo glad because of the dog, there isn't really anywhere else for him to go so when he's wet and muddy he had to come in the front door. My children did do Tae Kwon Do and it has to be done on the hard floor. Who wants to try and vacuum up bits after a kids party? You'll never get it all out of a carpet! Having said that our church is one of these modern designs that is used all week for a variety of things in addition to being a worship space. We have a carpeted lounge and a wooden foor in the "church". The lounge is used for toddler groups and lunch clubs and after 15 years still looks fine. It gets shampooed every so often when OH can get hold of the industrial cleaner from work. It's one of those hard wearing cord type carpets. Shag pile on the other hand wouldn't work!! Valkyrie Posted February 10, 2009 Share Posted February 10, 2009 As OH is in the carpet business I have to say - HARD FLOOR! But make sure you choose one that has a non-slip surface otherwise lots of accidents when the drinks go flying. There are rubbery/vinyl tiles that are like that - and also easy to clean, but as we don't specialise in that side can't help much there - I do know Amtico is fab, but expensive. How about calling John Lewis for advice? They are really helpful. Our first house had horrible carpet tiles in the kitchen - never again. Also no carpet in bathrooms either. A friend of mine got the most wonderful old solid wooden floor from an old dance studio - its gorgeous,looks lived in & was cheaper than new solid planks. Typically we couldn't find a suitable amount of reclaimed stuff, so have solid oak planks downstairs, which are still beautiful & easy to maintain,but had to be 'weathered' before we could use them. This is because if the temperature is to be turned down to get a better carbon foot print, the hard flooring is not as warm as carpet and therefore a heat loss unit. If part of the room is to be used for dancing then yes the dance area only should be wood. The things you have to think about is cost , maintenance, how easy to clean and how safe it is, wooden flooring might meant some of this but a highly polished floor is dangerous were as carpet is just a vacuum job or a once a year special clean. Also carpet wears better than wood some laminate bend when wet then dry oddly and become a trip hazard. This in turn means someone could claim for a fall which is something no one wants. So think about putting carpet down and if needed for a special area for example a dance area then only that area should be wood. Valkyrie Posted February 11, 2009 Share Posted February 11, 2009 For carpet you would need special contract carpet/carpet tiles which is very heavy wearing - but that said they DO wear in areas where there is heavy traffic ie. through doorways, stairways and hallways and would create a trip hazzard if not replaced quickly. Of course under tables would last longer, but the amount of sticky stuff trodden into the pile is not easy to clean if it isn't sorted out immediately. That once a year special clean is not hygenic.
