Groovychook
We bought our panels premade. OH just did a brick surround and put the panels on top. He's always fiddling with and adapting the run most weekends . Where did you get your pre made panels Chelsea? My OH is telling me that he'll be able to make me a run... this is after recoiling in horror at my quote from Aviaries 4U! However, lovely as he is, OH's mantra seems to be 'why do today what you can put off & do tomorrow'. Thinking that maybe pre made panels would spur him on a bit!! atsw
aww look at them helping! No, quality control I think Well, either way, work is progressing at some pace. Today I've laid the first seven rows of slabs, emptied, moved and refilled the compost heap, and levelled the soil around the run base. I hope to have the remaining slabs laid by this time tomorrow. The run arrived in 10 days or so. Andrew

Ain't Nobody Here
*sigh* Can you pop round here and do the same for me when you're finished . I've got a few wonky slabs laid and the rest lying around randomly . Seeing as you're a slab-laying expert, can I get some advice?! I'm only laying a path and a few slabs for the run to sit on. Would I be advised to put sand down before I lay them?
Cooks
ANH - yes! edited to add hubby said it doesn't hurt to add a bit of cement with the sand to stiffin it up a bit as well! 1 shovel cement to 7 shovels sand hubby said
Ain't Nobody Here
Thanks, CookieMonster . Although I now have a nice man who's going to lay my path for me . And rotivate the whole garden, lay a new lawn and build a nice little wall . Well, he shares a surname with me (and has the same name as a member of Pink Floyd so I just have to, don't I ). He reminded me of my brother too - not a particularly sound reason to choose a gardener but what the heck . And OH has said OK .

sparkysmum
I didn't realise there was a thread about walk in runs. I love mine My neighbour is a rather good joiner and built mine to my spec (similar to Aviaries4you) He said he would be happy to quote for others. I can definately recommend him (sp?) atsw
bigger pics of the new walk in run. That is a good size run, and I like the way you've put the mesh well down into the soil. That should deter digging by foxes or, perhaps more importantly for a walk-in run, the dreaded Mr Rat. I'll post a few more pictures of my efforts once the ground work is complete and then more once the run is finally up. It was by seeing what others had done that made me want one of my own. This forum is such an inspiration . Andrew
atsw
Seeing as you're a slab-laying expert, can I get some advice?! I'm only laying a path and a few slabs for the run to sit on. Would I be advised to put sand down before I lay them? As CookieMonster said, it is good to use sand under the slabs, it's much easier to get them level on sand than it is on bare earth (much easier!). For total stability over time, I agree that a little cement in with the mix is good, especially for pathways and patios. I'm just using sand under my base-slabs as for the most part there will only be chickens wandering around on top of them and I'm not planning on moving the WIR once it's up! atsw
you' ve been busy Andrew! Indeed, I feel like I've not stopped all week! I've made great progress, the base and surounding groundwork is now complete (finished about 10 mins ago). I've created a little picture-blog of the progress made over the last five days. My new run (from Aviaries4U) arrives in two weeks time. I'll add to the picture-blog once we start construction. Andrew

shaunw
Hi guys, I am just in the process of designing the walk in run for us.....i am Mostin's OH as we have recently acquired a cube and i am getting a little fed up of the girls wrecking my lawn. I have done a design and modelled it in a free to download program called Google sketch Up. What do you think? By the way does anyone know the best places to buy the materials. in particular the plastic roofing? also the weld mesh for the sides? any ideas appreciated. shaun
Ain't Nobody Here
Blimey, Shaun, you're putting Palmer07's and my little diagrams to shame . I must check out that program, it looks great . I love the tree and the fact you've got the cube in too . It looks really good and should be really steady with the support from the shed and the low wall. Can't quite tell, is that your house at the back of the lawn? Is it on a concrete base? What's on the right of the diagram where the sloping roof will drain onto? Sorry for all the questions - it looks so good I want to know everything!! It's going to be a really good sized run - I'm . EDITED TO SAY: here's a couple of threads about weldmesh. http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=38299&hilit=weldmesh http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=35878&hilit=+weldmesh
shaunw
Hi ANH no its not our house in the background its actually a double greenhouse. i wasnt planning on using a concrete base as we have a small wood at the top of the garden and a chipping machine so we can make our own bark chippings to throw in there. On the right is actually a hedge but i havent drawn it on here, i am planning on putting guttering round the run to collect the rainwater and a water butt to save it in....i am a bit obsessed with collecting rainwater, its my bit for the planet...lol i am slowly but surely mapping out more of the garden on this program so in time i can show the whole thing but i thought most people would only be interested in the chicken run part ...not the rest! After going out today i may not have quite got the scalle right on my drawing so might need to tweak it a little for a more accurate pisture but the general idea is there.
