Lesley
Excellent news!! - just make sure you are offered a care package which suits........social services can have a tendency to promise the world to free up beds and then the package isn't all it was meant to be - my Grandmother was being dressed for bed at 5.30pm

Joojoo
Well he's not home . I rang this morning to be told that the nursing staff weren't aware he was to be allowed home today The Staff Nurse then rang back half an hour later to say that the doctor had said he could be discharged this afternoon The conversation then went as follows: Me: "That's great, what care package have Social Services put in place for him?" Nurse: "He doesn't need a care package" Me: "I think you will find that he does" Nurse: "Well I will have to check with Social Services who have assessed him but nothing has been put in place for him" 2 hours later and another telephone conversation Social Worker: "Hello Mrs W. I am calling to discuss your father. He is ready for you to collect". Me: Hello. Can I enquire as to the care package you have put in place for him if he is ready to come home?" Social Worker: "He doesn't need a care package". Me: "Yes he does" Social Worker: "I've spoken with the nursing staff and the Occupational Therapist, and they are happy that he is fit to look after himself" Me: "No, he isn't" Social Worker: "Oh, and why do you believe that?" Me: "Given that he has severe diarhhoea with sudden and total incontinence and is unable to wash himself and that he had severe difficulties getting in and out of bed and is unable to dress and undress himself, I feel that he needs to have a care package put together for him" Social Worker: "I will go to the ward and see him and call you back" 1 hour later and another telephone conversation Social Worker: :Hello Mrs W. I have visited your father and you are correct that he does indeed need a care package" Me: "Thank you!!!" Hoorah for common sense!!!!!! What is it with these people? They can't see what is staring them in the face. They would have been perfectly happy to send an 83 year old man home with all of his problems and just expect him to be able to deal with it all. So now he won't be coming home until Monday, which is a big disappointment for both him and me, but I'm determined not to accept him being discharged until they've got it all sorted out. Once he is discharged he will go to the bottom of the pile again and be waiting months

Ain't Nobody Here
How annoying that you had to fight so hard to get what he obviously needs . I'm glad you managed to get them to see sense .
mostin
How annoying , so sorry to hear that your dad has to stay in over the weekend, but at least things should be better for him at home when he does finally get there .
mad house
God I could screem for you!! Good news he is well enough to return home though, even with a care package. We had the same sinario with my dad, the hospital said he could go home with no package, we said he needed an intense package,in fact in our view was unable to leave the hosptial unles he had 24hr care. Care worker and doctor looked into it and sadley my dad died less than 24 hours later. No one checks no a days, they jus want you out and a free bed. Push for what you want and dont give up!!
