LJ's Chooks
We have always had a feather issue with our girls, they all have BB's on, but still manage to tug sometimes. I read in that sometimes a Cockrell can help police things. Is this true, or would i just be opening myself up to more issues? All our girls are large but could i introduce a Bantam cockrell to controll them or a full size??? Just a thought, would welcome your views? Has anyone else tried this? OH has said i could get more chooks if we can fix the issue.... but as much as Id love another couple, i cant if we are going to have more issues
Patricia W
Hi, my experience is limited and I'm sure there are others on here with more, but for what it's worth here are my thoughts. First, you need to be confident you and your neighbours can cope with the noise! You can hear my bantam cockerel half a mile away! So we pad the eglu with a thick rug etc to muffle his early morning call - but we also have lovely neighbours. Secondly, although my cockerel is definitely top chook, I gather from reading other posts on here, that this is not always the case. I think you would need to do introductions carefully as you would anyway. Also, although my Phillip is much bigger than my girls I think he'd be smaller than most LF. So, I don't think it's necessarily the answer What do other's think? Tricia
The Dogmother
I doubt that he'd help, in fact he may contribute to any baldness when he treads the hens.
LJ's Chooks
mmmmgrrrrr I wish there was an answer!! Ukadex on order, I think they are just destined never to get on and we just have to live with the problem. We do manage it, dont get me wrong. We love our chooks and not sure that we can do any more to stop it??? Hopefully this time around it will turn out to be a moult, but who knows - I think we have a phantom knicker theif!!!!! Egluntyne
Fully grown hens would probably marmalise a bantam cockerel, unless he was mature and bossy. I agree with the others. It would create more problems than it would solve.
