I am south Cambridge Indie.. :lol: you have Cambridge Poultry in Bottisham, they are excellent, or there is a famer in Fulbourn that sells them as well, where I got mine. Depends on the type your after :)

there is also a place in hertfordshire that sells hens but I cannot for the life of me think of it's name..... errrm?? :think: thornes or something like that.

Indie, I am on Cambs / Beds border and will be off to Bottisham with Cookie Monster later this month to get a couple of hybrids to add to my flock.

But if you are after a ball of feathers then you NEED this;

Although you can`t have her, she is MINE! ALL MINE, Mwah ha ha ha ha :twisted:

She is an Orpington, I have three and they are all feathers! So lovely too. Stella (pictured) will jump on my lap for cuddles and the other two run (well more of an enthusiastic waddle at speed) at me every time i open the back door. Oh and they are meant to lay 140-170 eggs a year.

They have all been up the ladder but kind of jump/flap down. They are still living in the (green eglu) so just using the (cube green) as a playgtound. I know another forum member has lots of different posh breeds (large fowl and bantams) and they have no problems with the cube ladder

Just to ditto that all mine manage the cube ladder fine including my Orp, and here's a picture of my Speckledy when she'd just hatched some eggs

She's lovely, regular layer of dark brown eggs, excellent Mum, not the friendliest but not flighty by any means. Whereas my Orp is entirely led by her stomach and is a HUGELY friendly bird. Had to take her to the vet today and she quite happily sat there being petted by all the vets and veterinary nurses!

ooh, decisions decisions! :D

Just to warn you though the fluffy/heavy breeds usually indicate low egg production and then have a tendency to go broody :roll: my fluffy cochin just started laying a week ago (after a 5 month winter break!) and has now gone broody.

If you want lots of eggs maybe a fluffy looking hybrid or something like a Maran/speckeldly/rhode island red may suit.

Search out all your breeders in the area and go and have a look - they will give lots of advice too :)

Cant wait to see what you get.....

I just looked at all these pretty chickens and now am drifting to bantams but i do like the speckledy hen as well.

I wish there was a show on as Owen on another post went to Reading Poultry show & it looked really good.

i am off tom so am going to nip along to thorns to see what they have there.

Thanks for letting me know re the ladder...i still have a run to build!!! :)
