motherhen
Sorry forgot to say, Chronicle is the evening newspaper for the Tyne and Wear area (Gateshead, Newcastle, Sunderland), Journal is the morning paper for the same area - both belong to the same company. mostin
I got quoted in the article , how proud am I , I really hope it helps the Lewis'. I am Elaine Wood in real life by the way . Glad this is still getting so much support.
Larkspurs
That Journal article states a different reason entirely! Ronald and Elizabeth Lewis, of Dennison Crescent, Birtley, keep the birds in their back garden, but have been told by the Gateshead Housing Company that they have to go. They have been given until March 31 to find the birds, which the company says are a health and safety risk, a new home. Health & Safety risk? Either the reporter has made an error or the Gateshead Housing Company are desperate to wave the H&S flag.
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
The BBC has a new site starting soon - Dig In. www.bbc.co.uk/digin which I understand is about self-sufficiency. Maybe there's something relevant for them in this for them to cover the issue? Or what about lcoal BBC news? Has anyone approached them? Councils HATE bad telly coverage. Olly
Only 485 people signed so far and we have lots more that that registered on this forum alone Bear in mind that a lot of those registered here are not regular posters. Reading some of the previous posts I'm not sure that everyone has understood the purpose of this petition. It's stated to be 'to abolish all local by-laws prohibiting the keeping of hens in gardens'. By-laws are regulations passed by local authorities. I've never come across a by-law prohibiting the keeping of chickens, although no doubt some exist somewhere. Even if the petition were to succeed, it wouldn't help Mr & Mrs Lewis. They are not in breach of a by-law, they are in breach of their written tenancy agreement. Guest
really sorry everyone, just had a message from their grandaughter to say the media has jumped the gun on this one! They have another meeting with the council next week, she has no idea where the reporter is getting his quotes from. I'm so sorry for getting your hopes up but after reading the article I thought they were in the clear I will update you next week.
