Chickens banned

That Journal article states a different reason entirely!

Ronald and Elizabeth Lewis, of Dennison Crescent, Birtley, keep the birds in their back garden, but have been told by the Gateshead Housing Company that they have to go. They have been given until March 31 to find the birds, which the company says are a health and safety risk, a new home.

Health & Safety risk? Either the reporter has made an error or the Gateshead Housing Company are desperate to wave the H&S flag.

just a quick update for those of us not using facebook...

I'm very pleased to tell you that Mr and Mrs Lewis' grand-daughter has been in touch with me, she has sent us the following message...

"Justine, i would just like to say thanks so much to you for setting up this group in support of my grandparents and thanks to everyone else for all the lovely messages. My grandma and grandad are overwhelmed by the support. The stress this has caused them both is unbelievable and all the kind words he is receiveing is helping him to bear this. We will let you know when we hear anymore from the council."

So, as soon as I hear anything I'll let you know. Thank you all for your support so far!:D

p.s. we have 276 members in the group so far but hoping to get loads more :D

Well done, Justine. It's lovely to know that our support is giving the Lewis's some strength and comfort. Shame on Gateshead housing association. Hope they find it hard to sleep at night.

I'm in touch with their grandaughter. She advised me the couple met with the council the other day and she's going to update me when she can find out what happened. They're so grateful for all the support and nice comments on facebook by the way.

As soon as I hear news, I will let you know, fingers x'd it's good news!

Only 485 people signed so far and we have lots more that that registered on this forum alone

Bear in mind that a lot of those registered here are not regular posters.

Reading some of the previous posts I'm not sure that everyone has understood the purpose of this petition. It's stated to be 'to abolish all local by-laws prohibiting the keeping of hens in gardens'.

By-laws are regulations passed by local authorities. I've never come across a by-law prohibiting the keeping of chickens, although no doubt some exist somewhere.

Even if the petition were to succeed, it wouldn't help Mr & Mrs Lewis. They are not in breach of a by-law, they are in breach of their written tenancy agreement.

really sorry everyone, just had a message from their grandaughter to say the media has jumped the gun on this one! They have another meeting with the council next week, she has no idea where the reporter is getting his quotes from.

I'm so sorry for getting your hopes up but after reading the article I thought they were in the clear

I will update you next week.
