MadMitch
Sorry, you're going to hate me as well because I don't like it either and I'm not the type of person who can pretend to either. It looks a bit freeky to me. Plus if I was spending that amount of money I would want something hand carved in the UK where those are manufactured en-masse abroad and only finished of in the uk. http://www.dapplegrey.co.uk/pages/stock-001.html A good rocking horse should say what its made of. i.e crafted from oak, beech, ash, etc. not just "hardwood". Most crafts people are proud of what they do and will happily tell you that. There are plenty of rocking horse websites about, buy from them, not the big department stores. Old Speckled Hen
I've been looking for carousel horses and found this http://sallysrockinghorses.com/ There are some wonderful restored antique rocking horses here
Nutmeg
Ooooh I have always wanted a rocking horse! When I was a child I used to have to attend lots of hospital appointments and in the middle of the waiting room was a massive traditional rocking horse! (I can picture it now) and I used to sit on it rocking away waiting for my name to be called! A few years ago, I had to go back to the same hospital and there in the waiting room was the same rocking horse I felt sad that I had grown too big to get on it but it is still one of my treasured childhood memories. Your daughter will love it I'm sure.
fluffyknickers
I think the John Lewis one is lovely, as are all of them - but then I would love any as SO want one. The John Lewis one does state its made in Yorkshire and not abroad and finished in the UK. Plus I wouldnt be surprised if its not from the same place as the other link which says it supplies John Lewis. If i had the money I would get one for sure - its an heirloom. AJuff
After even more research I have decided that an antique restored horse would be best and there are plenty to choose from. The prices are comparable if not cheaper than the new one in John Lewis! What size horse for a 6 - 10 year old?

ubereglu
If it were me I'd go for one of the larger ones as then they can use it for longer-yes it takes up more space, but it does mean you could have a go on it too! I'm glad you're going for a restored one, to me that feels like a much nicer way to go and you're more likely to have a unique one with more character. AJuff
Larger horse? How many inches high?????
MadMitch
Difficult to say, its best to go and try one. Large ones are usually somewhere between 48 -52 inches and some extra large at about 60inches (these would take a teenager/small adult). I would always go for the largest I could afford and space allows. Its better to grow into than grow out of when you are spending a lot of money. To be honest I would still ride mine today at 43 if I still had it. The good news is OH says we can get one as soon as we have some spare dosh though. AJuff
http://www.rockinghorsestables.co.uk/forsale.asp Well I found this place near to where I live who recommend a 44"-46" horse for a 6yr old. Compared to all the other sites they seem very reasonable and affordable. http://www.rocking-horses.co.uk/for_sale.html I liked Dulcie and Sadie on this site too although it does not say what size they are. AJuff
OMG I bought a rocking horse yesterday off ebay!!! OH is not happy. he thinks DD has enough and she won't use a horse. Anyway I wanted her to have one for her birthday so she's getting one!! It's a 1950/60s huge Collinson horse which has been repainted dapple grey 52" high!!! It has no saddle or bridle at the moment so I'll need to get one. I only paid £400 for it so paying for other bits doesn't feel so bad. DD is beside herself with excitement. Will post a picture of 'Harry' when he arrives.
Shirl
Can't wait to see a pic of him. She's a lucky girl.

ubereglu
Sounds lovely! I can't wait to see photos of him. My sister wants a rocking horse and a house with a bay window to put it in, then at Christmas they can swap it round and put the christmas tree in the window instead-it's a nice dream she has! AJuff
Weel Harry the rocking horse has arrived and looks lovely in DD room. OH has accepted I wanted her to have one. It needs some work as he does not have a saddle or bridle etc. I have ordered these and will post a pic when they arrive. DD is absolutely delighted.
