ted
Just as I finish off the extended wildlife pond I suddenly thought about the day that hundreds of tiny frogs start leaping from the pool and all over the garden. How will the chickens react??? Does anyone know?
Cooks
they will probably go mad at trying to eat them.
ted
thats what I suspected... may ask attenborough around to film it....
Lydia
And not just the little frogs either. My chickens have "played" with big frogs and then competed to see who'd eat the best bits
smanners
Something I'm dreading too ! It's our first Spring with chickens and a pond full of frog spawn (= potential snacks ). Only thing is ..........the goldfish will take their share of the tadpoles first and may not leave much for the girls. Bad news for frogs in our garden Edited March 11, 2009 by Guest
Hen Watch
They will eat them. My lot love devouring frogs (and tearing them limb from limb.... sorry...... )
ted
I will be planting much ground cover and rocks etc around the pond to reduce the carnage. Thanks for confirming what I expected would happen...
Egluntyne
Here is a link to the never to be forgotten 'Frog Rugby' thread. It is Christian's favourite. **Clickety Click**
Lydia
There was clearly an amphibian orgy going on in my garden last night - the gribbetting even woke me up Anyway, this morning we let the girls into the run and Volty immediately went for a drink. In the glug was a large frog who'd decided this was a good place to spend the day! Stupid thing must have hopped through the cube bars as there is no other way he/she (probably a she) could have got in. Luckily we got to it before Volty got going, otherwise there would have been another rugby game in the run!
ted
Good link Egluntine. I await the inevitable carnage.
Ygerna
Good link Egluntine. I await the inevitable carnage. Keep your Camcorder handy, my girls found a frog this week and its actually really funny to watch. ( I am not a cruel person by nature, but, its by nature that the chickens did what they did and well it was amusing. DH rescued it fairly quickly too)
Luvachicken
We have a pond too and Iwas surprised to find Evie had found a toad. She didn't eat it, just tossed it about. She has since found 3 more , who knows where, but I was a bit sad that she has been killing my wildlife. I thought they ate bad things like slugs and snails. I also thought toads gave off some yucky stuff on their bodies when captured but obviously the girls don't notice it. I'll have to hope that some make it past their beady eyes.
