Zoey81
My youngest chook Lilly laid her first egg yesterday and i've woken up this morning to let her and the other out and she was just laid on the roosting bars. Her breath is really laboured and she has snotty kind of stuff coming from her nose. She's been in good health, eating fine, getting along with the others, they've not pecked at her or anything. What could be wrong with her, my other half thinks it may be something to do with her laying, does anyone know of this happening to chooks. I'm absolutly gutted as she is my favourite! Any advice would be great please. Shall I take her to the vets? Thing is i'm not sure she'll see the day out until I get home from work. My husband is going to check on her at lunch, we;ve moved her into the house where it's quiet, but she seems in a really bad way!!
Groovychook
I've no idea what the problem could be but because of that, I'd get her to the vets as soon as possible if I was you. She doesn't sound too great, bless her...

Guest
vets asap!
mostin
I agree, vets asap, it could be nothing to do with the egg, if she is snotty and breathing is laboured it could be a really bad infection that only immediate antibiotics will be able to start fighting, she may need steroids too. Bring her in and keep her warm, until you get an appt. so she doesn't waste her own energy making body heat, you can also monitor more closely what she is eating and drinking then. Zoey81
Too late! She's died. Thanks for all the advice though everyone, I would have taken her to the vets tonight but she didn't make it through the morning. R.I.P Lilly, I'm so upset, she's my favourite, from a happy healthy chook yesterday to not here any more. I've read elsewhere that chickens can die quickly and without signs of illness. All of my others are fine, fingers crossed the same doesn't happen!
fluffyknickers
Oh no, sorry to hear that - its so sad. I know I have only had mine a few weeks but I would be really upset too. Michelle x
Falkor
I am SO sorry and know exactly how you feel! I put Stella (my favourite) to bed on Saturday and found her dead in the eglu on Sunday She was a little subdued on Saturday afternoon but we put it down to all the commotion going on in the garden with WIR being built. They can go downhill very quickly. You could pop her to the vets for an autopsy to check cause of death to be sure for your other girls. mostin
So sorry to hear Lilly didn't make it . They are really good at hiding when anything is wrong with them until the last minute, don't feel guilty, but I know I always do. Spend time with your other girls and give them extra cuddles tonight. So sorry, big hugs xxxxxxxxxxxx

kathryn
I'm so sorry to hear about your chicken. I lost one a couple of weeks ago. I think the worst thing is just how quickly and without warning they go. Mine was fine one day, the next she was walking a bit slowly but still alert and eating fine. The next morning I found her in the eglu, she couldn't stand up and was obviously on her last legs, poor thing. She didn't last another few hours. She was 6/7 years old so I guess it was maybe just her time. Unfortunately chickens do just get sick and die, they don't have the strongest grip on life. Guest
hi i run a chicken sanctuary in gt wrley nr cannock and as most people know it just can be that any chicken just dies for no apparent reason if other birds ok i would not worry to much i rehome ex batts and even i lose some at some time or other somtimes could be stress related as most of ex batts are stressed out and req time to recoupeerate so i always keep mine for that reason 1 month /as any dieying is a loss /distress to owners and wonder if theve done somthing wrong but its just chickens way of giving up
