Cinnamon
I had to get a new tumble dryer about 6 weeks ago, as my old one had broken. So I bought a Hotpoint one trough John Lewis, which was fine for about 3 weeks, then suddenly started making a terribly loud clunking noise, which changed to a different noise when the drum went the other way. It sounded like there was a handful of nails being rotated in the drum - not good! Anyhow, they swapped it 2 weeks ago for a replacement brand new machine, which has been fine for the few times I have used it (I didn't need it at all while the weather was good, so its only been used about 5 times). Until yesterday when, out of the blue it started making the same noise as the other one I have pretty much lost faith in this model now, so can anyone recommend another to me? We have always had Hotpoint up until now, but I think its now time for a change!
redfrock
Bosch Bosch Bosch Bosch! I had terrible problems with a hotpoint w/m. It died a month after the guarantee. I now have a Bosch w/m and tumble dryer (dishwasher and fridge!) and both of them are 5 years old and still going strong. They came out really well on the WHICH report when I bought them. Granted they are dearer than some others but the build quality seems much better. My F/F is 9 years old and still ok.
Cinnamon
I would love a Bosch, but they are just too expensive at the moment I had just decided on a John Lewis one, but its half a centimetre too wode for the gap we have
redfrock
I would love a Bosch, but they are just too expensive at the moment I must admit they are a bit on the pricey side. I was lucky - I bought my w/m and t/d with some of our wedding money ... one of the benefits of being part Cypriot and having a couple of wealthy uncles - we don't get bought presents or have a wedding list. You either have the wedding money pinned onto your dress (no way when husband's distant ex-girlfriend was there!) or get given cheques
Egluntyne
Bosch gets my vote too.
Cinnamon
Ok, I have gone for a fairly cheap Bosch one. Hope it lasts a bit longer than the darn Hotpoints It does look VERY smart, I must say..................... And I do like Bosch products. So, if someone can arrange no rain in Henley for the next few days, I would be very grateful
Nicola H
I would recommend Bosch, mine is only a cheap one i think it was £150 and it is still going strong after 5 years.....Good luck with your new one Sarah i do hope it doesn't let you down. Old Speckled Hen
Yes Bosch. I have a tumble dryer and dishwasher. Which? has this site http://www.which.co.uk/advice/how-to-get-discounts-on-products/ and with a quick look I found this http://www.clearance-comet.co.uk/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=103418264&prmenbr=37087214&aunbr=103764974
Cinnamon
Thanks for that Very interesting site, & one I have logged for future use. John Lewis have said that they will be compensating me for the trouble I have had, so I am happy with that.
Old Speckled Hen
John Lewis are brilliant I wish there was one up here
The Dogmother
I used to have a White Knight one, which was brilliant, but when it eventually conked out (afterr 6 years) I got a Hotpoint one and have had nothing but trouble with it - it's a condenser and the pump has been replaced 3 times, it makes a heck of a racket and I'm sending it back! Interestingly, I read a Which? report on tumblies last night and White Knight were 2nd on the list of excellence (after Bosch) and Hotpoint were at the bottom! Get your money back! Blackrocksrock
Bosch condenser here too and dishwasher which was bought when they were changing models and got £100 off
jlo
My vented tumble drier is a John Lewis own brand one and it is brilliant. It scored quite well in the Which report that I read. Bosch has got a great reputation though and I am happy with my Bosch dishwasher so I am sure that you will be happy with your purchase. Guest
My friend who repairs domestic appliances always said ANYTHING but a Bosch, Zanussi, Miele (or substitute most of the high priced foreign makes). He said they were always ridiculously expensive to repair as you couldn't buy a small part. For example if the door hinge was broken you would have to buy a whole new door assembly wheras with a hotpoint you could buy a hing for a couple of quid. I have to say I still agree with him - the roller on the tray of my bosch dishwasher in the rental property is broken and this part actually costs £7 on a hotpoint and is £90 for a whole new drawer on the Bosch. Cheaper to buy a replacement machine on Ebay! Its a bit the same with cars - my mate used to drive a metro and when she hit the barrier in the car park her hubby got it fixed pretty cheaply. When she did the same in his Audi they had to pay back some of the German national debt to get it fixed!
Charlottechicken
I am on my second White Knight, and my first one, a vented one, lasted about 10 years before the drum sheared off its mountings. I had a new one, a condenser, around three years ago and it is very good. My last electric bill was £67 (December, January, February) and I use the tumble dryer to dry everything at the moment, so it doesn't cost too much to run either. The Dogmother
I use mine when I can't dry outside, which is quite often at this time of year as I can't rush out to bring the washing in if it rains. I just don't have the space at home to dry it on airers, so the tumblie is a godsend.
chelsea
I am not surprised you've had trouble with a hotpoint, we've had nothing but trouble with our hotpoint washing machine and drier over the last few months. We had a Creda tumble drier for years and it was excellent.
Reikiranf
We have a Zanussi condenser dryer that we've had for at least 12 years! We did have to replace the belt last year but that only cost £17 and we did it ourselves after looking up how to do it on the internet Apart from that every other appliance was Hotpoint, but I've found lately that they don't seem to be as reliable as they were and I've since found out that Hotpoint dishwashers used to be made by Bosch and all Hotpoint goods are now made by Indesit. Following recent correspondence with Hotpoint customer services following the breakdown of a 3 year old dishwasher I have come to the conclusion that their customer service is as shoddy as their goods, so I have just bought a Zanussi washing machine to replace the 4 year old Hotpoint one that broke down after finding that they couldn't send an engineer round for nearly 2 weeks Apparently whichever brand you go for it's the same basic model & build quality, so if the cheapest machine they make is £200 and the most expensive is £400 you are not getting a better machine by going for the top of the range version You are paying for features be they display or extra programmes. Cinnamon
You will NOT believe this - I can hardly believe it myself. My nice new Bosch tumbly, which arrived on Friday is bloomin well FAULTY. Thats the third fautly one in 7 weeks Basically it tumbles for a bit then just stops. Apparantly there is a sensor which senses when the washing is dry, & that must be kicking in.In the mean time,I have a heap of soaking towels I think I might try a John Lewis one next......................... Blackrocksrock
Oh no - can they not come out right away on Monday and mend it?
Looney
Bloomin 'eck Can't believe the trouble you're having I have a John Lewis washing machine, no idea about their tumble driers tho.
Guest
I wouldn't want it mended - I'd want a replacement. Take a careful look at JL branded stuff - I was looking at hand blenders - their own brand is NOT the cheapest but it is the one with the smallest motor! bellekatz
I have a JL dishwasher which was a rebranded Zanussi - it is fab. I think most of their stuff is made by big names and rebranded - see if you can google the model number and find anything out about it. Cinnamon
The thing with the JL stuff is that is has a 3 year guarantee, plus I have a JL washing machine which the tumbl will sit next too, & they will co ordinate. I still can't believe that the Bosch isn't working properly, as I had such high expectations of it. It just stops after about 10 mins drying, & also keeps saying that the filter is in need of cleaning, when its perfectly clean anyhow, which it would be as its only a day old
Guest
The longer guarantee was what made me interested in their one. I guess I'm good at finding the bad bargains though - I'm the customer whose always complaining in Waitrose that their own brand low cal ice lollies are a whole POUND more than the Del Monte or Solaro ones!!!
