Cate in NZ
I know my lawn needs some attention but this is getting ridiculous. Phil, Brie and Ella have all decided to moult simultaneously and what passes for a lawn in my garden is completely feather strewn. It looks like someone has had a particularly energetic pillow fight What I can't understand is why, when we've had a glorious summer when they could all run around featherless and not get chilled, do the stupid creatures wait until the weather's on the change . They'll freeze as the nights get colder now Anyone around here doing any crafty pillow/ cushion making for Christmas I could sent you any number of feathers

Nicola H
I have been collecting feathers for ages and intend to make a cushion when i have enough but it only seems to be Bunty who has had a full moult so far, the other 2 just shed the odd feather now and again...................Collect those feathers Kate people actually sell them, but i think they have to be sterilised ( not too sure how you do that )...................... Mrs Frugal
Izzy's moulting badly too. Feathers everywhere. She stands in the middle of the lawn and has a good shake and flap and the feathers fly all over the garden, bless her !

I wonder if I could stick them in the autoclave at work They'd be sterilized all right Phil's moult is far more dramatic than the others I've got to admit.... you can track where she's been by the feather trail. The others seem to be on an earlier stage or partial moult, but still, the feathers everywhere Do you want some more Legbar feathers for your cushion Nicola
Charlottechicken
Recently there have been some articles in the press regarding 'sustainable' fashion. Apparantly, scientists are investigating alternative natural sources for biodegradable artificial fabrics made from raw material such as chicken feathers and rice straw. The chicken feather material will resemble wool and be very light Save those feathers now, it could be next years haute couture............ Nicola H
Do you want some more Legbar feathers for your cushion Nicola Kate if you really can be bothered to collect them I would love them, but honestly only if you have the time to chase after them, it took me ages to collect Bunty's feathers just as you go to pick them up they seem to blow around the garden, they are so soft and fluffy............... Popcorn
Kate - I was going to start a similar post last week...but ran out of time before Stefan woke up. I mowed the lawn last weekend, the chickens were out but had taken cover under the shrubs. when I had finished, I'd stood and admired how lovely the lawn looked before I put the lawn mower back in the shed. I came out of the shed and thought a fox had been in and got hold of Louise. Red feather everywhere. EVERYWHERE. The lawn did look nice for 5 mintues at least
