leaving eggs in the nest box, how long for?

Recommended Posts

hi,

i'm going away at easter for long week end. a good friend is coming in to check on the chickens every two days, and fill up food, water etc...

i'm a bit worried as one of my girls has just started laying almost everyday, so if she doesn't lay an egg until after my friend has been on day one, they may end up with two eggs in thier nest box by the time my friend comes back the on day three?

does that matter?what about my other girl who sleeps in the nest box..? will she mind that theres an egg in there. what are the chances of her breaking the egg?

is that ok?

i know omlet say its ok to leave them for a week end...BUT....?

am i worrying to much?

I wouldn't worry too much.

You might get a few poop covered eggs that's all. If I work in the morning and they've not laid by the time leave, I sometimes come back to find multiple eggs in the same nest box and they don't seem to mind. And they will still be ok to eat. I keep my eggs on the kitchen counter and not stored in a fridge, so I would think they will be OK if not collected for a day.

I was a bad chicken mummy this morning as over slept (been up all night with poorly daughter) and didnt let them out til after 9am  .

When I let them out they were fine but I found an egg on the bars and it has a little hole pecked in it but not through the membrane.

I am sure if I would have left the door open it would have just been laid in the nest and ignored but probably pecked out of boredom and interest.

Because we have sooo many chickens they all seem to lay in one particular coop out of the three, and sometimes they lay in the night and there can be 6 chickens sitting in the big nestbox at one time soo its normally fine. They are extremely careful, so you should have no problem :D :D
